992 DIY oil change
Discussion
I’ve just completed the first oil change on my 992 myself, and learnt a few things which may be useful for anyone who wants to do so too. My 992 is just under a year old and done 3,000 miles, so I was keen to do an oil change now it’s fully run-in rather than wait for the first service at 2 years.
There are lots of YouTube videos on how to do it, the best one I found was by Kies Motorsports.
Unsurprisingly, it was much cheaper than taking it to a dealer. Total cost was £164, comprising £120 for 10 litres of oil and £44 for a new filter, O-ring and sump plug. Versus an initial quote of £520 from my (excellent local) OPC, discounted to £390 since it was with them anyway for some warranty work.
I bought the oil from Opie Oils, the Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 was unavailable in 5 litres, so they supplied ten 1 litre bottles. Everything else I bought from the OPC.
I used 9.1 litres of oil, more than the 8.3 litres most of the YouTube videos suggested I would need. This might be because I jacked up the rear of the car so it wasn’t completely flat when draining, and the fact that I left it drain for about an hour, and the engine was warm.
I had to buy two new tools, a specialist tool to engage the sump plug, much better than a flat head screwdriver, and a 36mm socket for the oil filter cover. See below for links on Amazon, I’m sure other outlets are available.

Finally, I’m glad I did it since after the oil change I cut open the old oil filter and could see multiple small metal particles, presumably from the running in phase. So the oil filter was doing its job by catching these, but bit does seem a bit nuts to have official 2 year servicing intervals. Going forward I’ll ensure oil and filter are changed annually!

I'm coming from a 997.1 (worry about BS and IMS etc) but I change my oil every 5K or every year, whichever comes first.
I've just moved to a 997.2 in Aug last year and did an oil change right away so I could ensure I was my oil of choice. I've just ticked over 5K since August and changed my oil again if I'm being honest it didn't look dark but I have another 4k planned in the next couple of months so thought I'd opt for safety.
