Hi all; looking to get a rough idea of cost on the following jobs before I get myself in to 996 ownership:

Drivetrain and engine:
Gearbox rebuild, I hear 2nd gear can fail and need a rebuild
o2 sensors

Cooling:
Air con condensers and radiators

Suspension/Steering
Two front shocks, top mounts
Droplinks
Track Rod ends
Steering column replace/rebuild

Anyone had any of these jobs done recently and happy to share the rough cost? (UK South East)

The best way is to enquire over the phone to a specialist, that way you are atleast coming across as serious.

Or just buy an example that has had most of the major work done and stop worrying about it, especially if its only a weekend toy.

Thanks yeah I had an inspection done on the car and got some rough figures, was looking for others opinions before going back to the owner with an offer

This might be a daft suggestion, but can't you look for a gearbox from a scrapyard?

Not daft at all. I guess the only problem is there might be a chance you end up in the same position; I think it's quite a common problem for second to go

Be a lot cheaper if you do it all yourself and buy the parts from design 911.

Yeah some of those jobs I'd take on myself for sure. Others, sadly my set-up means a job has to be started and finished in a day, don't have the luxury of leaving a car in pieces without getting nagged at :-D

That's amazing, thanks for that. I had a long chat with Chris at Wrightune who was super helpful and we got a ballpark figure out. Offer's been accepted on the car :-)

Thanks all

Well done on the offer, the early 996s are lovely. Is it a manual coupe, ideally on ambers? Pics....?

It's exactly that. Manual Coupe on ambers, LSD (although I imagine the diff clutches are shot), Sport Pack with the wingback seats and the lower suspension, Traction Control for what it's worth and the 18" Turbo Twist alloys. Totally standard and unmolested; just needs a bit of money spent to bring back up to tip-top condition.

Can't wait!

This is not 100%, you ask / shop around. Some cars need certain stuff replaced, some do not for a long while.

If you do 3K miles year vs 10K miles, then maintenance items come in thicker and faster in the latter case naturally ...

Nice win! If I didn't have a 997 I'd look out for a car like the one you've just bought.

Post pics up if you can. Happy collection day!

Lovely! I do like a 997; thought I'd start my Porsche wings with a 996 though.

I've DIY'd these on mine, but if my Indy had tried to charge me 3-4.5k for replacing both sets I would have been very unhappy. Assuming you don't want new hoses etc the parts come in under 1k (much less if you want to use Autodoc or similar). If I hadn't had to wait for extra parts I could have done it all in half a day (minus the regas, which was about 80 quid plus a dryer). I'm not a pro mechanic by any stretch and this was all on my drive without a ramp.

To put that into perspective I got charged about 5.5k for an engine out, head strip, replacement (one bank) hydraulic tappets, and sundries.

I am normally against DIY with high end makes of cars, but as N/A & non GT 996's are generally priced modestly and will remain that way. I think it kind of falls into the 'working man' hobbyist category of cars, i.e Japanese sports cars, classic muscle cars etc
