992 GTS Coupe suspension / gearbox opinions welcome
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm considering taking the plunge on a lovely nearly new 992 GTS PDK Coupe. I've only test driven one with PDCC and thought it was quite a "busy" ride, firm, but not awful - but then again I only drove it for 20 minutes so probably was quite excited about the car rather than thinking about what the ride quality was like to live with on bad roads. I imagine without PDCC the ride maybe less comfortable.
Just wondering if any 992 GTS owners have thoughts on the standard -10mm suspension on UK roads? Journalists are a mized bag - some say it liveable/good considering the nature of the car, while others say it's just too stiff for the UK. Cars with standard PASM are few and far between and would remove some of the "GTSness."
I've never owned a PDK car, only ever opted for manuals, so hoping I don't miss the engagement of the manual, but they seem to be far less popular with less choice and quite possibly doesn't suit the engine as well as the PDK, especially with such long gears. Just thinking out loud here before I put my money where my mouth is!
Thanks all for thoughts.

Hi Meeko,
I’ve had my GTS manual for a few months now and covered about 2.5k.
The roads near me are awful and find myself dodging potholes on a regular basis. However, on a half decent surface, I don’t find the standard suspension too firm. Yes, you bounce around a bit but, for me, it never feels uncomfortable.
With regard to the gearbox, it’s completely down to personal preference and how you will use the car. I drove both on my experience day and undoubtedly the PDK was quicker round the track. For me though, it just felt a little sterile and didn’t give me the satisfaction I was looking for. I don’t necessarily want to drive a bit of road perfectly first time, if I muck up a change or chose the wrong gear, it gives me a reason to go again, and again, until I absolutely nail it. That, for me, puts a smile on my face and makes the driving experience all the more interesting.
However, I can fully understand going for a PDK, it’s a superb box and if I was using it to commute each day, I possibly would have chosen it.
Hope that helps.

In my experience of quite a few 992 cars, the biggest difference is from tyres and tyre pressures. I’ve had cars with and without PDCC and -10mm. So on a GTS I’d say the -10mm is key for GTSness as you rightly say. And PDCC is just a personal preference. I’m not convinced it meaningfully improves the ride comfort but it does make the car turn flatter. However, it can make the ride feel a little synthetic.
To answer a couple more of your points, although the gears are a little on the long side, I’ve never felt like I want to change more regularly. On the plus side, if you are just cruising along, the engine has so much torque that you can just leave it in 3rd or 4th and still make decent progress.
Personally, I think power wise, it is on the limit for a manual. Any quicker and it might get a little frantic, but for me it’s just right.
Whatever choice you make, I think it’s a great car and I’m sure you’ll love it.

Thank you for your replies, they're really helpful. I think my mind is at rest on the suspenson at least. It's just the manual vs pdk debate now! It's a mission to find one to drive given no dealers local to me have anything and the car I've found is perfect spec/price.
I 'll make good use of Adaptive Cruise - not available on the manual so PDK has that in favour. It's just the spirited drives may not be as engaging. This is going to be a daily do it all car so I'm thinking don't torture myself trying to drive a manual before I view this one on Monday!

Totally agree regarding tyre pressure, I run my GTS with the tyres at the comfort pressures and it makes a massive difference day to day.Never tried a PDCC equipped car so can’t comment but apart from dodging potholes, which I do in our daily golf, I don’t find the GTS set up uncomfortable or too jarring.
I have a GTS 4 cab and I deliberately ticked the option to delete the -10mm and helper springs because of reports of "too stiff" suspension. I live in Germany and get to drive very fast and I am yet to engage the PASM button as the suspension seems super for all types of smooth German roads. At around 250kph I do not want to be jiggling around at all, but maybe that is me lacking track and/or racing experience. I did drive in the UK for a bit and of course roads are much worse and I think standard GTS suspension would be far too firm for me and would cause me to even slow down. Plus you have a lot of pot holes where you either weave around or crash through and very cambered roads. My wife would have also been unhappy.
Everyone to their own - that's why the option is there. PS: I also have my 4S tyres at comfort settings.
