Looking for some advice on buying winter wheels.

Hugely enjoying getting to know my new to me 991.1 GT3, but I am finding it a challenge to get much of the power down and consistently difficult to enjoy the breadth of the rev range with the Cup 2 tire during these months of the year.

So I’m considering a more mixed use tire, probably PS4s as I know them. Ideally though, I’d like to keep the cup 2s to hand for track days and the dry summer months.

(Appreciate some of you use cup 2s year round, but I just think I will get more out of the car by having a choice).

So it’s looking like winter wheels with PS4s might be the route i go. Would greatly appreciate the thoughts / experiences of those who have gone a similar route.

1. What’s the best value aftermarket wheel set out there… I love the stock wheel but they’re hugely expensive. Any experiences with BBS or HRE at more sensible money new? Any thoughts on a RUF wheel as a curveball option?

2. I read that some of the BBS options are around 3kg lighter than stock each corner, anyone got first hand experience on how this difference feels to drive?

3. Buy new or second hand?

4. I’ll likely have to rely on an OPC to swap them over each time, anyone found any difficulties doing this?

5. Any advice on how to properly store wheels when off the car

6. I’ll speak to OPC re keeping the warranty intact if using aftermarket wheels, any experiences on this?

Thank you all in advance for your thoughts and suggestion

I have BBS E88s for my 996 GT3 as well the stock wheels. It surprised me but you can feel the weight difference. The lighter E88s make the car feel more responsive.

One more question :

I notice people often go for 19” bbs e07 rather than stock 20’’ . Would regularly swapping between two different wheel sizes play havoc with alignment / suspension set up?

I’ve got BBS FI-R’s on my 991.2 GT3 with Cup 2 Connect’s on them which I use for summer and the odd track day. I think the Connect App is brilliant for dealing with tyre pressures smile

My winter wheels are my original GT3 wheels with PS4S on….that’s my OEM set of wheels with N rated tyres on which works for warranty.

If you want to extend your warranty the car has to be 100% OEM so the original wheels and N rated tyres. Not used my OPC for swapping wheels over but imagine they’d be expensive. My storage solution is to keep them in my garage !

I have a set of 991 Turbo S wheels fitted with Alpin winter tyres for sale. I've now got a 992 so the Turbo S wheels won't fit.

PM me if you're interested. I'm just north of Norwich airport. I believe most OPCs offer 'wheel hotel' where they store the wheels for you, can't say what they charge now though.

PS4S on a spare set of wheels is a great idea - I do / did this on my 991.2 GT3 and the tyres are really brilliant - car remained agile and still felt like a GT3 but felt more stable and confidence inspiring in winter than when on the MPSC2’s.

I also had BBS Fi R’s - stunning wheel - used these as my main (not winter) wheel . Re swapping over its absolutely no problem and doesn’t screw up the Geo. storage - I stored mine in the BBS box you get with them. Only problem is they are nearly £k10 for a set now and are on a super long lead time but they are very, very nice - much nicer than the OEM wheel (& lighter)

Have the "official" Porsche Winter wheel set on my 7.2. Using the car as daily in a country that gets snow frequently they are a must. The cars on Cup 2s are getting a handful when temperatures drop too much. It's impossible to get proper heat into them in these conditions on regular roads

Gorgeous Mags!

As for cost... glad they do a Forged Alu version now! Bit more weight and extra spoke.

My personal holy grail perfect spec 991.2

and then in Silver on a GT Silver Touring

I don't think the small saving of around 1kg per wheel for mags is worth it for around 1kg per wheel saving. I prefer the looks, but for the current price double the Forged I'd give it a miss.
