The 997 - General Discussion Thread
Discussion
I don't know whether this has been done before, but apart from derailing another topic, or disturbing the appreciation thread from just having some amazing 997 Photos, I thought I would start this one. I know I have lots to rabble on about and ask questions of other people in, exhausts, coilovers, suspension, ICE you name it all on the list.
So here we go... just awaiting the new boots to turn up for mine. PS4S all round, that's £2300 I've handed over on Michelin products in the past week and a bit. Excited to get them on though.
Anyway, aftermarket exhaust chat anyone? 200 Cel Cats?

Gen 1 or Gen 2? So here we go... just awaiting the new boots to turn up for mine. PS4S all round, that's £2300 I've handed over on Michelin products in the past week and a bit. Excited to get them on though.

I have a Gen 2 and I went with a miltek cross over pipe and valved Designtek silencers and I am very happy. I do wish it was a tiny bit louder to be honest and I don't think I've ever closed the valves
Fitting it was pretty straight forward was quite nice how simple the 997 is to take apart, I was expecting it to be overly compleicated

Carrera, S, turbo, GT?
Mines a tip 997 turbo.
Merc paddles make the gearbox more bearable. The power delivery of the turbo helps disguise the flaws in quite an aged (but really strong) gearbox.
If you have PASM, I recommend a DSC module - this, together with a suspension refresh, top mounts, coffin arms etc and fresh PS4S transforms the handling.
You’ll need the gyro module if you have a non-turbo .1
ICE - PCM with Bose and subs is, at best, crap.
Loads you can do to improve it, budget dependent.
I think Porsche have released their own 997 fitment PCCM+ but far better can be achieved elsewhere with a HU swap, decent mid drivers in the doors etc.
977.1 C2S for me.
I think I have come to the conclusion I'd like the Topgear switchable mufflers, I have spent too many days reading about it, I posted on the 997 Carrera Owners UK group too and some people posted some vids. I'll say Headers, 200 Cel Cats and the X-Pipe sounded way too lairy for me, even if you can shut the valves.
So mufflers decided upon, its really whether I add the 200 Cel Cats with the cross over pipes too, which I assume takes out the centre muffler?

The cross over does replace the centre silencer. I’ve got a Milltek one, had it since January and still not fitted it. I have booked it in for next month, finally. I’d have done it myself but the cat bolts look too far gone for me to get out while lay on the garage floor. Great pics. Seeing your tandem oil pump reminds me that mine needs a bit of preventative tlc to extend its life. looking for some advice on my battery, which is an 18 month old Bosch S5, on my 997.1. I've recently got my car back from a 2 month long repair for a faulty gearbox. Whilst the g/box was being repaired the car sat outside the garage and didn't move for circa 6-8 weeks.
Since having the car back I've been alerted, by my Bluetooth battery monitor, that the battery is now loosing it's charge over a couple of days. Before the repair I never noticed it loosing charge and I suspect it was taking weeks to discharge.
Could a 2 month period of neglect cause this?
Thanks

Batteries can be fickle things at times, I had to do the same on my Mini, battery wasn't even that old it just didn't go anywhere for a while and it was done.
I thinkI have come to the conclusion that I am going to go for the TopGear valved mufflers and 200 Cel Cats with the cross over pipe, I think it should be on the right side of the lairy scale, we'll find out I guess.

Yes. I accidentally forgot to turn on my maintenance charger when parking up two years ago, and the battery went flat inside two weeks. Remember that in addition to the alarm, most 997s have trackers too which are on all the time regardless, not to mention the heavy load the battery has to deal with powering all the additional control modules a 997 has over the 996 when it's running, so if used for a short journey there's no way you'll make up the voltage used to start and run the car for the period. Thanks
After it went flat, my battery - Same Bosch as yours - never cranked the same and gave up the Ghost altogether a couple of months ago. Right after we moved house, which was nice.

Unless the plumbing changes drastically with this setup, you won't need a crossover pipe as the 997.1 doesn't have one because the cats are in the middle of the pipework behind the bumper.I thinkI have come to the conclusion that I am going to go for the TopGear valved mufflers and 200 Cel Cats with the cross over pipe, I think it should be on the right side of the lairy scale, we'll find out I guess.
997.2s can manage a crossover pipe mod as their cats are built into the manifolds. (Sorry if you've though of / realised that)
Da Original Whyayedee said:
Ahhhh I had not realised that, I thought there was a 3rd muffler that the crossover pipe removes also?
I did wonder. No, there's not. With the 997.1 gas routing goes: Into the manifolds, round to the back of the car where the cats are - crossing over at the same time - then into the silencers. So basically, there's one cat and one silencer per bank.

Doesn't it have a 5yr warranty? Or do you think they'd blame you for leaving it standing? I can't see that being in their disclaimers.Since having the car back I've been alerted, by my Bluetooth battery monitor, that the battery is now loosing it's charge over a couple of days. Give them a call? Or the dealer who you bought it from.

Good point I had assumed that leaving it would make it my fault however you could be correct.Give them a call? Or the dealer who you bought it from.
That said it's improved a huge amount now that the big freeze is over I'll need to monitor it properly.
Cheers

Cheers, agreed there's a lot of stuff running in the background which all add up. Now the worst of the cold is over (he says hopefully) it seems to have improved. I'm off over Christmas so can keep an eye on it. After it went flat, my battery - Same Bosch as yours - never cranked the same and gave up the Ghost altogether a couple of months ago. TopGear do two types of 200 cells cats: crossover and X-pipe. It is the crossover most people go for - they do sound different and you lose some low end torque with the X-pipe. Make sure you get the one that fits your needs.997.2s can manage a crossover pipe mod as their cats are built into the manifolds. (Sorry if you've though of / realised that)
