991.1 GT3 RS engine failures
Discussion
Hi there
I am GT3 RS 991.1 shopping and a Lava orange car I came across with 16k miles had a new engine four months ago from Porsche Reading done under warranty at a cost of 40k but covered by warranty. The car has 18 month warranty left and the owner tells me the engine actually has a 10yr warranty, is that correct? I thought only the regular GT3 had a 10yr warranty on engine. So does this replacement engine in the 991.1 GT3 RS have a 10yr warranty or will it be less, also when they replace the engine in an RS are they putting in the 991.2 engine or just a revised 991.1 RS engine, the owner said it developed a tick and it was diagnosed as cam followers I think he said and Porsche agreed to fit a new motor. Car looks absolutely stunning and been offered it for 155k with two sets of wheels.
I’ve also been offered another Lava Orange with just 6500 miles and just two previous owners, along with warranty and good spec for the same money.
At the same price would people find the much lower mileage car the more attractive buy?
I guess it depends if the car with new motor does have the ten year warranty.
Ultraviolet was my first choice but Lava orange is a stunning colour!

So, Porsche will only replace the engine with that if the same generation… so within the 991.1 but the next or latest version.. I believe G for 2016 was the final iteration for 991.1 RS and also used in 991 R. You won’t get a 991.2 unit DGG.
Price is good with 2 sets of wheels IMO if the car is coming with Porsche Warranty. The key then is to just keep extending it.. as this should cover the engine anyway.. but worthwhile double checking.
Pretty fair price but for me personally if I was in the market for a 991.1GT3 RS it would have to be UV.
This is a chunk more money but good value considering the upgrades. Not sure of its history but worth checking on whether Its had a high speed shunt on a track.

What an absolutely stunning car.
Back to the OPs question I'd be very happy buying the Lava RS if its had a new engine under warranty. Always thought the 10 year engine warranty expired on the car's 10th birthday and not the engine so best to check with the OPC.

Ahh…you remember that thread also… It has been the only thing that has halted me from enquiring further, as it has everything done to it that I would want… perfect track tool. This is a chunk more money but good value considering the upgrades. I've a pretty good memory for a 56 yr old
Without committing myself and assuming its the same car I'd still be interested pending a thorough independent inspection. Potentially a very handy bargaining tool to knock a chunk off the asking price.
Still think its a really stunning car and the perfect garage companion to a well fettled Agate 981GT4.

Yes UV is my first choice but I’m struggling to find one for sale at a fair price, missed out on two fair priced cars. This is a chunk more money but good value considering the upgrades. Not sure of its history but worth checking on whether Its had a high speed shunt on a track.

The MR car is stunning but no Porsche warranty puts me off it’s essentially a 170k car with no warranty and if it’s been shunted I’d simply not want to touch it.
If anyone knows of anything thinking or planning to sell a UV please let me know.

I think the UV car the chap on here had a knock in was LHD?

Its hard graft that ages you not time.I think the UV car the chap on here had a knock in was LHD?

If its not the same car then I think its a great buy. No chance of getting a Porsche extended warranty unless you go through the faff of returning it to stock.

I thought MR parts were now ok under Porsche the warranty since the takeover.
It’s a bit complicated and probably case by case, for previously upgraded cars i think, with UK OPCs …. It’s not the same as in as Germany where if necessary you can drive to Manthey in Meuspath, MR can look at their bits and then almost wheel the car to the ramp in the next bay on the OPC side without leaving the building. And the new Tequipment offerings are very specific component also with Porsche labels and branding.

Went out in a different 991.1 RS today for quick drive.
Even on the road, immediately more impressive to me than even a 991.2 GT3.
Confirms that an RS product is what I would want next for my usage.
There should be one or two nice lava orange cars coming to market soon with great specification and fair price.Even on the road, immediately more impressive to me than even a 991.2 GT3.

Markets are showing signs of a crash and will be interesting to see what happens to limited production hero cars like GT3’s, JDM stuff and other stuff like 458’s, will recession hit values or will value just hold or move up.

Saw the UV one with Manthey bits @ RPM today, had your name writ large all over it Even on the road, immediately more impressive to me than even a 991.2 GT3.

I'm also looking for one of these in a few months time. Do they have a habit of engine failure or are they fairly bombproof? I've heard rumors of both hence asking. What are the tell tail signs? Anything else to watch/look for? Prices seem to have gone up over the last couple of months.

Well I've been looking and still am.Lets just say I've been offered around five cars so far, one has had a new engine and the other an engine rebuild under OPC warranty, both track driven as such a warranty is an absolute must as it seems the GT3 RS 991.1 is just a prone to engine issues as the regular GT3.
Prices seem stable now, maybe even softening a little with all the current fears of recession and cost of living etc.
I've been offered a 17k miler, orange, most options, rebuilt engine, Porsche warranty for 142k.
Also been offered a 6k miler, orange, all options, warranty 155k
I really want purple but the ones for sales are asking too much, have been offered one with 9k miles for 165k, but that is via a dealer so has dealer margin on top, ideally need to find one from a private seller, but the orange car at 155k is tempting as for such low mileage and good spec it is a fair priced car.
This 911R with a replacement engine has done the rounds over the last few months....and seems to be going up in price despite not having sold and being at the third or fourth dealer who has had it. The R has the 991.1 RS engine doesn't it ?
I think you'd want a heathy discount to buy a car without its original engine. A classic without it's original "matching numbers" engine is worth maybe 20% less...especially on a car like an R which a hell of a lot of its value is in its collectible status.

The only exception to this being the Pre impact bumper cars where the mag crankcases caused such problems that nearly all had to be shuttle pinned and line bored.
Autofarm offered exchange series correctengines ... making for a much quicker repair ... but not matching numbers.
Peter Morgan accordingly suggested a 5% diminution of value for non-matching numbers ... although of course the engine number was simply "corrected" on many !!
