Just wondering if the 997 was especially prone to more stone chip damage than previous models? My recently purchased 54k mile 2009 997.2 appears to have its from factory ‘screen but the low sun shows up the myriad of tiny stone chips and scratches which previously owned cars with higher mileages present. I guess a car driven predominantly on motorways & A roads will pick up more windscreen damage than a mainly urban and B road car but nonetheless it surprised me. Anyone replaced a screen because of this kind of damage?

Before someone comes along and suggests you accidentally drive it into a hammer etc, most insurance companies will state you are covered for windscreen damage. Some, however, will state clearly what their definition of damage is. That said, they usually do not ask for evidence so the whole thing is open to abuse; and there are many who are comfortable/happy to take advantage of it.

There is another element to this but not something I am willing to publish on the intertubes. Send me a pm and I'll explain.

I noticed this on my 996, it bugged me in the summer particularly when the screen would always show loads of tiny pit marks. I've had the car for 12 years, it was my first 911 and I've decided to keep it along with my more regular drives. I've always maintained the oily bits and parts underneath but never the paintwork, along the way I picked up little chips and scrapes, the usual sort of thing on a 20 year old, 130,000 miler. So last year I had it resprayed, and asked them to change the front screen (£500) well worth it in my opinion as it now looks amazing and I'm not looking through a naff windscreen on bright days.

My old 997 suffered from this, I changed it at 93k miles but had I of kept it (and I wish I did) I would have changed the screen. As a specs wearer the extra laver of glass and potentially 2 dusty surfaces on top of a very pitted screen made drinking less that idea in low sun.
I always thought the screens must either be soft or the aero must direct a lot of small debris at the screen.

It's the shape of the car. V common in 997.

Hi,

I have the same problem with my 997.1 on 80k miles. Driving in low sun shows up hundreds of tiny marks on the screen, really annoying and can make it difficult to see in some conditions.

Planning to replace the windscreen this year although need to do some research on the best place to have this done. Any suggestions appreciated.
