Hello, everyone.

As a community, it’s time we stopped polluting our own well over the issue of the M96 engine family.

Whatever the reasons for the publicity surrounding certain versions of this engine,
the opprobrium being heaped on it isn’t helping owners (eg worry, poor resale, ratty used examples, expensive rebuilds, misunderstandings etc etc – the list goes on).

So, here’s a proposal to solve the problem.

Perhaps the leading Porsche specialists in the UK could get their heads together and agree a standardised upgrade for all M96 engines. It could be expressed as an output specification or an input specification but, either way, it should be an agreed industry standard, backed up by a properly administered certification or kitemark.

M96 owners would then be able to upgrade their cars, enjoy them, preserve them for future owners and protect their investment because the car will have been modified to a recognised industry standard. Insurers could get behind the scheme so that premiums could be kept low.

Plenty of private R&D has been done on these engines over the years, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to reach a consensus. The scheme could also include a standardised (and enhanced) maintenance schedule.

Porsche doesn’t need to be involved. This is really about the community supporting its members. Everyone would benefit.

Please join in if you agree.

My understanding is you have 2 main upgrades for the most common issues that are pretty much fixes.

1. later IMS bearing from the 997 later engine can be fitted when you do a full rebuild. This fully fixes the IMS issue. think this was on the later 997.1 cars only

2. nikasil liners will fix bore scoring

We've had ours for 11 years (and sold it due to having kids to our neighbour), no issues. I've known three other owners of 996 no issues.

However, our bomb proof mercs and audi have both lunched engines (time belt stretch and oil pump failures).

Seem like pretty good engines to me (the M96).

The s54 in my race car however, VANOS and crank bearings!

Everyone knows the UK M96/7 standard IS Baz and Grant and their merry bunch of men.
H*ll plenty of the top indys just rip and strip the M96/7motors and send them to Baz, because to quote them "messing about with the machining/machine shops is too much of a PITA, especially if something goes wrong once they're rebuilt and installed".
