Hi all - I keep looking at adverts for 911s where they claim, 'Non-sunroof model', like that's an advantage. I actually like the sunroof in my car and considered it a bonus when I went to see it. And mine works perfectly. Is a sunroof considered to be a bad thing on 911s? And if so, why?

Cheers,
J.

Think some people think it is better as it reduces weight and lowers the centre of gravity.

I’m sure for plenty of fellow forum members, this would make a material difference.

Personally, I couldn’t tell the difference and would much rather have the sunroof!

Yes, a bad thing.

They are heavy, they reduce rigidity in the roof panel, they make noises and they are rarely used.

Hmm interesting. I get your last two points possibly, although thankfully mine isn't making noises yet. But I doubt very much if many people could tell the difference in the drive/handling between two identical cars where one has a sunroof and the other doesn't.

Guess maybe it depends on the model ?

For sporty cars (eg. 991 C2/S/etc), it’s a nice option to have IMHO. I don’t think it’s a bad thing and would actually use it. For sports cars (eg. Cars more track focussed, etc) I can see the logic of not having a sunroof for the reasons mentioned above.

When I had my E90 M3 (saloon), it had a sunroof and I loved it. When I came to sell it, I was worried that people would not want the car because of the sunroof. But the dealer (think it was Munich Legends) actually said it was a very good option for residuals, because people wanted the sunroof and the coupe version couldn’t have the sunroof due to the carbon roof.

I debated sunroof delete when I did the bare metal respray on my 993. In the end figured I would never feel the difference, given the car is not tracked (and maybe I’m just not a good enough driver to feel the difference!).

Anyway, just my 2c. Maybe I’m in the minority!

Yeah, makes lots of sense what you say. I really like having the sunroof when I'm pootling along country roads on sunny days at 40-50mph. No fun at motorway speeds of course.

+1
fwiw same here. Tracked focused cars / 911's then I wouldn't bother.
Anything else then sunroof is a great option (imo) come summer or winter. Let's face it, in the UK you've got to make the most of any sun!

I had a sunroof on a 996 Turbo and never used it. It was too noisy and you had to open a window to release air pressure to avoid a "thrumming" at anything above 30 MPH. Never again ! I buy convertibles now !! The 991 design is different of course as it sits outside the car when open - I have no experience of these but could quite possibly be quieter.

I had a 991 on loan with a sunroof. It looked and sounded bloody horrible.

When the first 991s were manufactured they all had sunroofs. My OPC had taken an order from me for one without a sunroof and had to come back to me asking if I'd like a free sunroof in order not to have to wait for the car. I said I'd wait...

Got one on my C2S and love it - use it all the time. Great option.

Earlier cars had them instead of air conditioning.

However, any 'sporting' models - CS, GT, RS, or even the new 'T' - shouldn't have a sunroof because it contradicts the 'purity' and adds weight and complexity in exactly the wrong place.

Also agree that in can spoil the clean lines of the roof, and can cause quite a lot of noise and buffeting.

I have a sunroof on my 991. On a warm, sunny, dry day, open sunroof, press sport button and enjoy. Allows you to hear the pops and bangs from the sports exhaust even more.
I drive around the country roads in Norfolk and have never noticed any issue with performance of my car with a sunroof. The sunroof on a 991 was the first to open on the outside of the car. This allowed Porsche to lower the car by a few mm's. The sunroof makes no difference to the centre of gravity at all. As for the aesthetics of a sunroof thats down to personal taste.

Sunroofs are very subjective, but I love them... in glass.....Have the glass one on my new T, no quality issues, no creaks, just more noise, more light and means I get the 2 stage spoiler which provides some great theatre...!

I also love the look of the all black roof on the 911 ....seems to provide the optical illusion of lowering the car even more...!
