First post but have been lurking for years!

I recently bought a 62 plate 991 C2s from a reputable Indy - 42k miles. Pdk, really nice spec with sport Chrono, sports exhaust. First Porsche.

I love the car, but have a potential problem. When stationary and at idle only, there is a rotational grumble noise coming from the engine area. Only happens once the engine is warm, but is there reliably. Only really noticeable at 800 rpm, but then disappears above 1000. I first noticed the issue from day 1 driving home from pickup.

I had a different Porsche Indy listen to the issue, and he thought there was something abnormal that needed to be isolated. His best guess was pdk related. He advised me to return the car for investigation.

I returned the car back to the original Indy where I purchased, and they listened to the issue and concluded that although there was something there, it was not significantly worse than other cars that they tried side by side. They offered to extend warranty for issues that develop from this noise for 1yr (beyond the original 3m warranty). Pretty reasonable. I sat in one other car, and agree there is a similar type of grumble, but mine is more pronounced.

The noise is bad enough to now be very noticeable to me. So going to be very hard for me to ignore.

I have now had the car for 1 month - but have only done 200miles. And need to decide what to do.

I would really appreciate any advice.

Only a 3 month warranty is pretty poor from the offset IMHO and would have wanted at least 1 year with a decent size claim limit as not much use if it ends up needing a new PDK box if it is only £1000 limit.
I personally would wait until you have owned it for 3 months and put a Porsche warranty on it as although it will cost you a couple of grand it will give you peace of mind for the future and may not even notice the noise enough to be an issue.

Hard to define what the noise is, but obvious solution if I were in your position is to get a proper Porsche dealer warranty on it. It'll probably cost you around £1500 including the multipoint inspection, but then you have total peace of mind, and I'm pretty sure it includes breakdown cover if indeed the PDK gearbox decides to self destruct....

I would return it back and try to find a car from OPC network. Not because they are perfect but at least you would deal with the manufacturer directly. Why would you drive an expensive sports car with an unknown strange noise? Not worth it imho.

Why not take it to an OPC and see what they think? Though ANOther indy suggesting to return it would start to get my antenna up.

I'd want surety there was nothing wrong.

Whatever you do, get a move on. You've dithered a bit already IMO and that won't help matters if you stretch it out.

Get the problem id’ed by opc/Indy ask the opc or another Indy to fix it under warranty. This stops the original Indy fob off. If it’s more than the warranty claim limit then original Indy should pay the difference, since the car is not fit for purpose.

Don’t wait to get it sorted - if the problem gets worse particularly after 12 months then you have little or no comeback.

You have to give the selling dealer every opportunity to rectify the problem. Contact the dealer as soon as you notice the problem – in person if possible.
If the dealer offers to fix the problem, make sure you understand any costs involved. Keep a record of your conversations and correspondence, and get all verbal agreements in writing.
If all else fails, you can reject your car as long as you tried to resolve the issue with the dealer first.
You must give the dealer details of your reasons for rejecting the car in writing, and within six months of taking delivery of it.
If the dealer refuses to accept your rejection of the car, contact the customer relations department of its manufacturer straight away. They might be able to mediate.
For help making your complaint, you can use Resolver.co.uk. The Ombudsman Services said “Resolver.co.uk is a free online service and app offering consumer advice and simplifies the process of complaining.”

Is it grumbling when stationary and in D/drive or does it grumble when in neutral as well?

Rich_AR: The noise is the same whether in D or N.

Thanks for all the great input.
