Hi, I'm looking for an inlet manifold that represents less of a restriction than the 3.4 litre OEM one.

I'd happily buy the X51 intake for the 3.4/3.6 but it's NLA.

So I have been looking at 997 intakes, as some of them are advertised as being compatible with both M96 and M97 engines.

The message from the eBay seller:

Yes. The bolt patterns are the same on all m96 engines. Boxster 996 997 and so on. The manifold will physically bolt on, however you will have to change and or modify a few brother hoses and such but that's it.

Which I'd love to be true.

This does look very similar:

However note the zig-zag pattern of this 987 manifold:

Which looks to me to match the upper face of the M96 intake runners:

The underside of which looks like this - a straight line:

The orientation is based on where the injector goes - I'm making the assumption that it faces down into the head (which seems reasonable, but I'd love to be told I've made a mistake!)

Have I missed something, or is the eBay seller wrong?

986 Boxsters have the injectors in the plastic plenum, which bolts directly to the head.

The 996 has the alloy manifold connection that the injectors sit in, and the (different) plenum then bolts to that; lengthening the inlet tract by a few inches.

Looking at the 997 parts diagrams, it looks like the M97 dispenses with that arrangement in the 997.

Yep, completely agree with you - the separate alloy section of three runners that the M96 uses doesn't transfer to the 997.

What I'm wondering about is whether the 997 manifold would bolt directly to the M96 head - and I don't think it will.

That is because the bolt pattern for the M97 intake looks (to me) to match the bolt pattern of the plastic section of the M96 intake, rather than the bolt pattern of the alloy intake runner section.

Therefore, the M97 intake might actually bolt onto the alloy intake runner section, but not directly to the head.

But this is all supposition based on staring at photographs, I'm hoping that someone has direct experience of both engines and can give a definitive answer.

Good shout, and that does show unequivocally that the bolts to connect to the head are in a straight line on the M96.

So! No easy way of mixing and matching.

It's shame that the M96 X51 intake is now a Unicorn.
