996 fire extinguisher brackets etc
Discussion
Having seen Escy's Boxster project burn itself to the axles I've been thinking about fitting a fire extinguisher - very much a "hope to never, ever need it" type thing, but after some thought I'm in the "better to have and not need, than need and not have" on this.
My understanding is that Porsche made the M509 kit for this, which looks like this:

But I'm unsure of these parts are still available (I have asked Hatfield OPC this question and am awaiting a reply).
Question is, is this the best method of securing an extinguisher in the car, in easy reach? What have others done?

All the brackets are available, for £110 from your OPC.
The Porsche OEM extinguisher is NLA from Porsche, but it's simply the Gloria P1DB 1kg powder extinguisher, so you can buy that from any German site for ~€30, or the UK equivalent the Kidde KSP1GM, depending on how serious you are about having it look "proper".
As the Gloria literally is the Porsche OEM one I got that, because I am clearly beyond help.
Therefore you can get the whole lot, brand new, for ~£150, which compares well to the second hand setup currently on eBay for £495.

I retrofitted it, here is my post. the photos are now gone as a result of Photobucket's new policy:

Yes I have had a car fire before when I needed an extinguisher. In an MG RV8 I had a relay short out in the fuse box and the loom caught alight and melted. I was dead lucky that it happened as I was pulling in to work and I used one of theirs, just 5 minutes before hand and it would have gone up in smoke.
What was scary about it, is that it was a dead short and didn't really stop until I disconnected the battery, the extinguisher just slowed down the flame, it kept on reigniting.

I suspect I pinched the parts numbers from your Pistonheads post- it's the same text as that Rennlist post, thanks for that info.
Interesting that someone else posts that it's the 1.3kg Gloria unit that fits the cradle, I went by photographs of the (said to be) OEM one which were 1kg. I have one turning up in the next few days so can see for myself.
If you fire over the pics I'll re-host and re-post them for you?

Has anyone ever used one of these tiny things to ever extinguish a vehicle fire?
They might calm one down for a few seconds but that's about it. All the 1KG ones are too small to be of any use on anything that has a bit of a root to it. My car has a plumbed in system:

Mounted in a similar way to the Porsche hand held but it has two nozzles in the engine bay and two over the tanks so whichever end goes up will get decently doused. It's a 3.375L AFFF bottle which is a better bet than powder in most circumstances for hydrocarbon fires as it provides some wetting. As the fuel tank nozzles are at the highest point over the tanks and the engine bay ones are in each rear corner of the bay pointing forwards towards the fuel rails and manifolds it should help if the worst ever happens.

The cradle finally turned up and - you guessed it - the 996 OEM cradle is designed for the NLA 1.3kg extinguisher, it looks like it's the 997 cradle that fits the 1kg extinguishers which are still current.Interesting that someone else posts that it's the 1.3kg Gloria unit that fits the cradle, I went by photographs of the (said to be) OEM one which were 1kg.
