Carrera or Carrera S
Discussion
What are your views about Carrera vs. Carrera S in terms of how fun it is to drive it on a daily basis. I heard an argument that more basic Carreras are actually more fun because you rarely get to push your car in daily conditions. I thought that sport mode would be handy for taking over. Also, the Carrera S brakes look pretty good.
Any advice would be welcome.

I drove both, ended up with the S and it did seem 'more', however I was buying on condition and the S happened to be the better car. If it was the other way around I would not have an issue with a standard 3.6 - the ones I saw were more likely to be low spec than the S's though.

Thanks Phil - is it typical for the standard model to have a low spec?Cheers,

I like the 3.6 as it likes being revved and they are fun to drive.
Figure wise a 3.6 with PDK (4.7) is exactly the same 0-62 as a manual S and with sports chrono it is 0.2 quicker again.
They are not necessarily lower specced as you do come across 3.6's that are specced higher than a standard S as some people were not fussed about the small performance and price premium for the S and would rather have spent the money on options.
You will pay around a £3k-£5k premium for an S so depends on if you are trying to buy within a certain budget.
Nav was optional on gen2 but most do have it.
Pasm is nice (optional on 3.6) so would make sure that a 3.6 has it and sports chrono if a PDK.

Not clear from the original post, but if you are talking current 991.2 generation, let me give my 2p.
My wife and I just bought a 991,2 and we drove the standard and S, and with the new twin turbocharged engine the non S felt great (I am just out of a 991.1 3.8 GTS) and the 10k for the S didnt seem worth it.
Add to that now PASM is standard on both now , and I personally feel that the standard carrera with a few choice options is the sweet spot int he range for real world use.
I caned one for 90 minutes round PEC and the brakes never faded either. Manual is a honey too.
Take a look at this vid from nick Murray.
You need to drive both and decide for yourself but in my view the "base" Carrera is still a plenty quick enough car in the UK.

Just think of the margins.
for a 911 the base model is the most value for money model. it costs porsche 2 to 3k more to make the CS but you pay a lot more for performance that is not really usable on the road. I would rather spend on must need options and enjoy the car. But with the CS you gain the kudos of a more expensive derivative.

Talks about margins and value for money... then goes on about spending money on Porsche's options for a 911 the base model is the most value for money model. it costs porsche 2 to 3k more to make the CS but you pay a lot more for performance that is not really usable on the road. For the people who say the new engine sounds bad or doesnt rev here is a Carrera without sports exhaust (and manual)

It does sound really average, though!
As for Carrera vs Carrera S, people differ as to which engine is the better. I find the 3.8 to be quite a lot better (stronger where it matters and more aggressive); others think the 3.6 spins up a bit more freely (but I dont really get that).
Dont worry about power - both are plenty fast, and neither is too fast for road driving.
