996 damper replacement / upgrade.
Discussion
I know there are a lot of previous threads, I have read them all - I think. And there is never going to be a definitive answer to my conundrum, however the prior threads do not get very close to helping me narrow my choices.
Car: 2001 c2, stock suspension. The springs have sagged with age and it is close to MO30 ride height which is fine, a few mm lower would be ok but GT3 ride height would not.
Car sailed through a suspension health check at CofG last spring and has been great to drive with their fast road, grippy front end set up. Very little tendency to understeer now. I can often feel the elderly stock dampers struggle to maintain compliance and control on typical B roads, less frequently they are a little floaty, perhaps slow to react.
The car is still a lot of fun, but this years upgrade was always likely to be dampers, and now it is time to choose which way to go. If I can I would like to delve into the delights of more modern technology and valving - without going lower than MO30 ride height or needing to upgrade ARB`s to feel the benefit for road use.
The Koni FSD gets good press from 964 & 993 drivers, CofG think they would work well on a 996, but Koni say `only with stock springs`. I would be a `guinea-pig`, C of G have not done a 996 install before, and I might need new springs too.
The obvious choice is a whole new MO30 kit. Dampers, springs and ARB`s. I like the fact that it is OEM, but the dampers are a bit old hat and many say the gains over stock suspension are rather minor.
Then we move to the B16 (pss 10?) and the Ohlins R & T Coil over products.
C of G think I would be pleased with the Ohlins. I have read that despite the fairly high spring rates, the clever damping gives decent compliance when set up for the road, without too much unwelcome harshness. But who knows? one mans harsh is another s compliant !
I am pretty tempted by the Ohlins option, but I would love to hear some real world feedback from people with exposure to the various options. I do not use this car on track, and my real aim is to have a bit more help from the dampers in exploiting the inherently nice chassis that the 996 seems to have.
