997 C2S or X51
Discussion
Hiya.
I'm getting back into Porsche again after a 4 year break.
I'm selling my low mileage / mint maserati GS so will have about 33k to spend all in I think.
Here'e my dilemma:
I've spotted a nice medium mileage GT silver 2006 car (with Cocoa leather at Mortimers) for 26,495 or I could take a look at an X51 car - these do go for a bit more money (understandably) but are they really worth it ?
I have to accept that sooner or later I need to get the engine rebuilt. This doesn't terrify me that much because all 911s need engine attention (with the possible exception of the late 964 / early 993. BUT Mortimers will stand behind the car and either pay for or help to pay for the cost of an engine rebuild if and when the car needs it (within reason).
Or I could take a punt on an X51 which is a more desirable, faster car but will be evert bit as vulnerable to bore scoring (possibly more so). AND it costs more so will use up my cash reserves.
In the fullness of time I would expect to make some chassis mods (GT3 ARBs, PASM box etc) and maybe turn to RPM for a CSR conversion.
I really like the 997 C2S. more fun than a turbo and more usable than a GT3 (and much cheaper than both).
What would you do if you had a max budget of 30K ish and wanted to get the best 997 you could ?

Just noticed that I said 's' when I meant 3.6 ! the 997.2 at Portiacraft is a 3.6
This it's a 3.8http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

Well that one looks bl**dy lovely if you aren't fussed about the mileage, and I fall into the camp where I'd rather have a car like that with sensible miles that I could use without panicking about depreciation. I'd buy that over a low mileage 997.1 in a heartbeat, assuming it passed a thorough inspection.pete said:

Good luck with the x51 hunt, very rare and sought after so they don't hang about (provided the seller knows the spec and advertises it correctly).
Another option might be to buy a 997.1 thats already had a comprehensive Hartech rebuild, these tend to be more numerous than x51 models, and provided all docs / PPI / borescope checks out, will be a very decent buy.

Doing a borescope check is pretty much common sense if a bit of a phaff. I'd love a manual C2S coupe that has a hartech engine but there is only one for sale at the moment I think...and it's been tango'd
Hartech (and the auto farm sillysleeve) have to be the way to go and ought to make for a tough engine.

Yep, but as I'm sure you know, not all re-builds are equal, so important to check what was changed (and also why of course)
Hartech rebuilds do come up fairly regularly, one of my pals picked up one a few months ago with a good spec.
As with most used buys, you may need to compromise on colour / spec to a degree or wait a long time and move fast.

...which I'm willing to do.
I like the ex Richard Hammond car for sale here but it's a bit toppy price wise though. I would pay the asking price if it had a Hartech fully rebuilt (closed deck cylinders - all 6) engine but as it is I would expect to set-off half a rebuild cost (IRO 6-7k) and then schedule a rebuild at the first sign of that slappitty slap noise !

You'll get into an OPC approved 997.1 for that price. There is one come on the market today. It's in the classifieds but no pics yet. The 2 year OPC warranty is a benefit if you can't find a Hartech or Autofarm car. I've just put a deposit on a red 05 car from OPC Bristol. I'll have a kitty running in case there are engine issues. Speccwise it seems a good buy. Chronoplus, ceramics brakes, short shift, sport suspension with LSD. The ex Richard Hammond car looks nice but needs some better pics. Targa Florio sold a lovely grey one at the weekend. There's still demand out there for them.
That's good advice actually.
Residuals do come it to it too though. In 3 years' time the 3.8s will probably be more desirable than 3.6 cars. It's not a daily driver so needs to be an occasion to drive.
I was lent a slightly tweaked (PSE, sports chassis, aero pack) 997.1s back when I had my 996TT. I actually thought that the 997s was more fun. All that torque makes for a very adjustable car.
I'll do my best to make an informed choice - I promise !

Just my view but I think a 997.1 is much more like a 996, engine and lots of the other parts/jobs seem very similar, but considering its age it seems almost older and other cars of that age. In contrast a 997.2 I think feels a lot more modern, engine starts perfect from cold, it's just all very precise and smooth, which I guess is good especially if it's a daily but 997.1 seems to have a bit more sole, even if that sole can turn into the devil. Although I agree with prior posts the 997.2 3.6 is a nice unit verses 3.8 of that time....

That sounds like an amazing spec..Any pics?Similar to a couple of Guards red ones I saw being advertised recently
with pccbs and bucket seats.
Anyone know if they were press cars?
