997.2 iPhone connection

My 997.2 has the iPod connection under the armrest.

The car came with standard connector for the 30 pin Apple connector.

So I tried using my Apple Lightning cable and plugged it into the USB socket of the car, however neither the car or the phone are recognising each other.

Am I missing a step?
