Seems (for various reasons) a preponderance of threads talking prices up on 996/7 turbos. Though, for balance, we should have the downside thread; what's gone wrong or what have people spent?

I'll go first:
6 months
£3k

Nothing major or notable, just simple things, some of which take a lot of sorting. The latter being timing cover bolts leaking (tiny amounts) of oil and the power steering hoses (15 years old) needing replacement and a cracked intermediate casing on a turbo. The former being heatshields and suspension arms (in before the shortage!).

Who's next?

Interesting to seem a longer term picture, which confirms what I hope to be nearer the average!

I think I'm correct in saying that all 996 gearboxes have the propensity to give trouble, but they can be fixed pretty well.

yes 2-3k i think is about average to keep them in top order, although the majority of service and maintenance is done by myself, there are times when that is just not practical (i.e special tools etc) you have quiet years and crippling years smile

Don't take the piss. That's about as much as I've managed this summer.

Don't have the paperwork for mine anymore but from memory it had (in 5.5 years / 40k miles) :

Various coolant leaks sorted
A radiator or two
Condensor
Fuel pump
A steering rack refurb
Brake lines
Idler pulley
O2 sensors
MAF about 3 times
Light switch (lights sometimes didn't turn on, or turned off at speed in the dark!)
Consumables (brakes and tyres)
Probably other stuff I've forgotten

No idea what it cost, but it never seemed like a particularly expensive car.

I believe it's had a new clutch and alternator since I sold it, and a couple of boost leaks fixed.
The sunroof one touch controls didn't work properly either when I sold it, so it needed a new sunroof module but don't know if that's been fixed or not.

997T, 50k, Owned for 1.5 years, driven 3k, 3rd owner

Gone Wrong:
Tyre pressure sensors TPS things don't work anymore - so instead of having to cancel the warning every time i took them out.
Air con needed refilling
Wheel Magnet balancing & Alignment
Rattles from dials
New as of this week - Car won't start in park, have to shift to neutral to turn over - guessing a sensor has died

Haven't fixed the gear situation yet but it is dodgy to say the least. Also done over £10k of modifications but that is not talking down (apart from that the Gen 1 PCM1/2 is complete dog ste) smile

No-one mentioned mileage! :-)

Actually about 3K miles per year!

Interesting because ostensibly, that is one of the major improvements over the 996 dash. Mine has a double din ICE which interfaces with an iPod okay, but there's no DAB or Nav so it's an upgrade (fairly low on) the to-do list.

Never you mind

02 plate 996 Turbo.

Done 10K miles in it now at 72K.

Gone wrong.

Rear brake pads
2 x rear tyres (Just gone)
1 service
6 coil packs.
SatNav thingy has never worked. Actually I lie, it worked once and told me I was in a field.
Turbo badge has fallen off.

New this week:

Drivers side door won't open from the outside.

Other stuff.

GT2 Rear wing. Don't ask about the cost.

I just found it extremely difficult to work with. The Sat Nav was dated and for some reason only allowed for half a postcode, to connect an iPod you had to buy a whole load of other items and bluetooth just wasn't available on the 1/2...which is just not good enough, and it was ugly to boot. So I to changed for a double din with all the bits and pieces needed (I say needed, I came from a 964 which had nothing so it wouldn't have been a life changer), and make the car feel more complete so to speak.

I'm surprised people use their cars so little. I thought these were the everyday supercars?! Surely if they're just for weekend use, you'd get something a little more suited...?

I can't speak for everyone, but it was not my intention, it's just other things got in the way (mainly dodging trees and rocks on an mtb). This too, I trust, will average out a bit differently!

hehe Horses for courses and all that - and I really do see the appeal of a GT3 or, for that matter Caterham etc. etc. - but on the right roads, with the right mindset, a turbo really is an indescribably awesome thing to experience.

hehe In that regard, I seem to have painted myself in to a 911-shaped corner:

  • She was cross with me for buying the car in the first place because "you'll only sell it!"
  • She was a bit vexed at the service bills (see above).
  • Having sorted the car, I did get to the stage of (briefly) advertising it, at which point she got really cross!
Given the above, I am resolved to carry on and do a few more jobs on the car, with the intention of it being a long-term thing and possibly even a "keeper".

11 years of ownership - 65K miles

1 x New rads
1 x MAF Sensor
2 x New Clutch plate (Has never required new flywheel)
Boost leak which was just a pipe had come loose
2 x New Windscreens
1 set of rear tyres per year (sometimes more if I track her)
1 set of front tyres every two years
2 x brake pads
1 x Service a year

I am sure I have forgotten a couple of things but on the whole petty trouble free.

I spend an average of £2.5k per year which I think is extremely good value for a 673bhp car.
