Oh for gods sake I need help.

If you (being more travelled than me) had 40 big ones to spend on a Carrera because you deserved it what would you be looking at? I'm after generalisations and conceptual thought, or something like that.

More specifics to come..

Okay. Stupid question but I left it as is because that's the real question.

What would be the downsides of a manual, gen2, low milage car over a late gen1?

For that price you can get a nicely specced gen2 these days. Downsides if there are any....

Theres a gen 2 dfi manual 997 Carrera in black at Porsche Hatfield with about 30,000 miles. Beautiful car and when I walked past it was surprised it was only £40k. I think this represents the best value £40k Carrera one can buy and all with two year OPC warranty. Car is mint.

I know there out there..

That's a 3.6. I am currently considering a 3.6 actually. I've heard, more revy engine, sounds fun. What's the thing with the 3.6? I mean any known issues...

Think I kind of wasted that post. Kind of know what I want really. Just checking..

Darn..

Looks up adoringly at his peers only to suffer pure rejection and ridicule...bds

Driven one for a week or so. Fabulous car. Probably one of the best 997 ever!

Gen 2 no engine issue at all as far as I'm aware

Although people talk about the C2 (3.6) the majority want the C2S (3.8) for the increased performance, better brakes plus PASM which is standard on the C2S and an option on the C2.

They sold C2S in a 3:1 ratio against the C2, so that should help.

Personally would go for a gen 2 2S

Something like this if PDK

Or this if manual

I'd definately stick with a manual 2wd coupe (as good as PDK is I think it'll age and manuals will be more sort after by enthusiasts.

This 997.2 C2S looks good - PSE, Chrono, Sports Seats and LSD!

I have been driving a 3.6 gen 2 manual recently and have loved it. Been quite refreshing and enjoyable.

Good gen 2 cars can now be bought for under £35k with a nice spec.

That's the feeling I get from the 3.6 Essential. It might have that frisky appeal. Will have to see.

So just to clarify g7, is that 3 to 1 more 3.8's?

Seen most of them rac70. That one looks gorgeous. I'd martini that white beaut up in a heartbeat. I know, stickers can look crap but that on white 911's.....looks great. Where does one get that done by the way? Price?

That's what I've been frustrated about Adam B. What really makes you say that about getting a 3.8?

Manual only. I want to actually drive the car not it me, especially around town. Don't think I'd get on with a PDK yet.

I have a feeling that the 3.6 would do for me. Thing that really concerns me is resale. Haven't driven either so will have to.

I sat in this (below) and decided this is all the car I will ever need, beautifull. Then I began thinking too much about depreciation, the smaller engine, other issues and ruined it for myself.

http://www.harbourcars.com/car/2/porsche-911/

I should be looking at 996/997 turbos with my intelligent hat but the prices are so hyped it's putting me off and I would not enjoy the experience of not putting to many miles on it. I also don't like the look of them. A straight 911 look is much cleaner to my eye (4S ideally but would be 2S). mmmh.

I've looked at the cayman R with the right spec and might be tempted if one came up but once again I just don't like the look of them all that much. Also don't see many Cayman with sunroofs....?

Older Porsches to me are where I should be looking I know but I just don't like the idea of them....I drove and raced turbos a little in the eighties and hated them. Torque steer from narrow front tracks (rolleyes) drove me insane. I used to get in a flat 12 boxster afterwards and adored it's wider front track. Haven't driven a 90's car recently if I'm honest though. I'm in the market of course if the right car comes up.

So here I am. I guess I'd like... a straight 997 that will depreciate the least. Yes, that's what this thread is about.

I was so tempted by this car but don't know if it's worth the risk with regard who/where they are. Anyone dealt with these guys?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

Any comments always appreciated as I'm probably going to take on board what's said around here as to what car I buy..

Anyone dealt with RSJ before by the way?

Phew..laugh

Bought my 996 turbo from RSJ. Joel and Darren (Sales) were great to deal with and Martin (Service) was excellent on the service side. I'd certainly buy from them again!

RSJ have a decent rep, although my mate had a so-so experience

I just never fancied the standard car, when the S came with more kit and power for little extra money, i am surprised the ratio is only 3:1 in favour of the S rather than 5:1, I see loads of 911 every day and few are 3.6. It's a minor detail but I also dislike the single flat exhausts of the 3.6.

That said a manual non-PASM 3.6 is probably the purest 997 choice, just buy with strong discount over an S so you can attract buyers when you sell on (by offering a similar saving)

You should still try a turbo IMHO, 45 will buy a good 997 turbo

In the same boat. I have a deposit down on a new CGTS; but now likely to change to a 997 Gen 2. Will be looking at one this weekend for a second time. It's from a known Porsche independent 3.8 Gen 2 (I personally prefer this over 3.6 - as said before small hike in power, PASAM etc etc & I think will have better residuals over the 3.6). It is PDK which I like, however most have the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel which I don't like so will retofit sports steering wheel with the flappy paddles. It is a 2009 (59 plate), with six months left on the Porsche Warranty 53K miles for £38,500.

Thanks for those bit's..

This may sound silly but if my local OP doesn't know for sure shoot then who would?

A car with PASM is equal to a non PASM car in which state? On or off? I was under the impression having this option allowed for a sharper suspension setting when on. Also PASM when off is a smoother ride - as in a car without PASM? Or is the car without the option in another state altogether (in the middle somewhere) If ya don't know gotta ask.

Yes, I'm going to try a turbo but that immediately puts me at least 40.000 miles on which is putting me off as the car will be a daily driver with some production trips/vid shoots planned. I hope I hate it...

I agree bout the wheel buttons, I'd be more tempted with some paddles. Never drove one though so cant say for sure. I had a PDK test drive booked in a 981 a month in advance at my OP but he cancelled on me because somebody elses money must have been greener than mine. Charming!

Anyone know what the difference in the torque curve is between the two cars? (in layman talk)
