Thinking of moving from my 2013 M5 to a 911 when its due a change later this year. I'm wondering whether to get a 991 Carrera S or an older 2012 911 Turbo S as I think the Carrera S may be disappointing performance wise after the M5. However I do like the looks of the 991 Carrera S. I also need the rear seats for a 10 and 7 year old.
I've not driven the latest F10 M5 but ran an E60 M5 and 996 GT3 back to back for three years, recently selling them both and getting a 997 GTS as my needs have changed.
The GT3 always felt the quicker car upto about 100leptons and the same goes for the GTS, after that its different and I'm not even sure how the turbo will seem.
You will have more fun in the 911 though, even going slower.
Regards
Fred

not the same model years but I went from e39 M5 to 996 Carrera, i was pretty underwhelmed with the NA 911 so have since a (few years back) upgraded to a Turbo, my view would be if you are coming out of a fast saloon like the M5 you will have to go straight to a Turbo or a GT to get the same performance.

Thanks and that's what I thought .. don't think the GT's have rear seats though for the kids FredBasset said:

Another non-current model comparison between an E60 M5 and 996 C4S:
- 911 is quicker off the line but at any other speed there's no contest
- 911 feels more planted and much more like a sports car
- Rear seats in a 911 aren't real seats, your kids might not be happy sitting in them for a long trip
- Boot space in a 911 is terrible
Overall it's horses for courses and depends on what you want. If I could only keep one of my cars it would be the M5, no question.

Interesting and would only use for max of 1 hour trips with kids. Otherwise would hire a car. Can live with the boot space. Interesting you would keep the M5
Our 10 and 9 year olds aren't comfortable for anything more than short journeys in the back of my 997. Thankfully I have a 2 and 7 year old but even our 7 year old complains about leg room nowadays. I think you've already got the best performance car out there for your sort of use unless your Mrs has a roomy car.

That's not the answer I wanted! you are probably right unfortunatelyPersonally, having owned both, I prefer the n/a 991 to the 997 Turbo S. Yes, the Turbo can be blisteringly fast, but it dispenses the performance with clinical efficiency.
90% of the time the 991S (C2 or C4) is a better place to be (IMO). The 991 also has a slightly larger cabin, with marginally more rear room. I would say the rears are fine up to 12+.

Yes rears are fine if you're a family of pygmies lol. I agree though 991 C2S lovely and more upmarket.90% of the time the 991S (C2 or C4) is a better place to be (IMO). The 991 also has a slightly larger cabin, with marginally more rear room. I would say the rears are fine up to 12+.

F10 M owner here and have driven all the other cars you mention. The question is on you really. Is straight line acceleration the big deal for you ? If that's what its all about then go for the Turbo S IMO because anything else will feel slow against an F10 M5. There's a chap on one of the US forums and he said that in some gears even his 991 Turbo doesnt feel as quick as his M5 !For me, unless I was specifically wanting more of a GT experience, I would get the S. Put it this way, have you also considered that 'the Turbo may be disappointing handling/feel/interactivity wise after the Carerra S' ?
Get the 997 Turbo S- truly epic car, bonkers fast, looks great, massive improvement exhaust note wise compared to previous turbos also, sounds very nice in sports/sports plus mode.
To me it's a far more special and desirable car than a 991 S. It's a usable super car at the end of the day. The 991 S is a long way off that.
Drive one, the moment you put your foot down in sports plus you will be laughing out loud...guaranteed..
Being an S there are not that many about either, certainly compared to a 991 2S it's a much rarer car. If you get one with a good spec and colour you won't lose so much. Another advantage over getting a almost new 9912S- the Turbo S high spec will have cost 130k new so has already done the bulk of it's depreciation as it's in it's third year.
Hope that helps.

Don't get me wrong I would buy one tomorrow, best thing I ever owned but if your kids need a lot of ferrying around then keep the M5 (or buy some earplugs and put up with the moaning)
Thank you all for comments.
As the kids are with me every other weekend and one night a week, I think I could get away with the 997 Turbo S. I have an old defender I can use to ferry them around some of the time and could hire a car for longer journeys. If it doesn't work out I can always sell it and life is too short not to have owned one at some point. Decision made. However I have a 9 month wait now until the lease is up on the M5!
