Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while since I decided I'd probably get myself a 996 and I've seen a 4S that I'd like to get inspected before I fork out the cash. I realise this question probably gets asked regularly and you might be sick of it, but I've tried the search function and I don't see any recent results. I'm looking at a car in Manchester (I live in Glasgow) and wondered if anyone could recommend an inspector that could travel to the location and has a good reputation for thoroughness. I was hoping to get it arranged for sometime this coming week.

According to the website they require the car to be brought to their workshop in Cheshire...

The main one I heard of who travels to see cars is Peter Morgan but he does not go north of Birmingham. I suspect you will have to convince the seller to take it to a specialist....

Does anyone know if Hartech will send an engineer to the car or do they also require the car be brought to them?

I would guess that anyone who is willing to travel will charge a hefty sum. If you can get the seller to take it to Mike at Dports and Classic it would be considerable less.

Porsche and Ferrari specialists R&D Automotive in Eccles, Manchester have looked after my cars for many years. They've also done PPI inspections for me (and stopped me making some potentially expensive mistakes). They may be able to assist you. (Can't contact them until Monday, so can't confirm now).

They would certainly need the car taking to their workshop as they can only do a proper inspection with the car on a ramp. As they're actually in Manchester, the seller may be more amenable to taking the car there.

PM me if you think this might help and I'll put you in touch.

Just take it the nearest Porsche main dealer , get them to carry out the PPi .. cannot imagine a buyer having an issue with this... recommend a bore score inspection at the sometime if the PPI is looking good.

Should I get the bore score inspection done before I buy it? Is it a problem that can be resolved prior to catastrophic failure?

I personally would. You won't get 'catastrophic failure' from bore scoring but it just gets worse as time goes on. Unfortunately, its an exspensive fix whether in the early or latter stages.

..Book it in @ your nearest OPC for their 111 point checkover, it's about £200 if you like the car.

Get 1 that's had a new clutch, all the rads changed, and a new set of brakes, they are the most common bits that break.. excellent daily driver, had mine 3+ years now..

I'm going to get Mark Wibberley to inspect it and then roll the dice. I'll get the cylinders inspected and a 111 check after I've bought it, if the inspection results are good.
