Mobil 0W - 40 recommended but as the car gets older probably better to use 5W-30 or 10W-60. I've always felt 0W - 40 is bit too thin for turbos especially as the cars are no 8-9 years + old.
Thanks! This is more what I was after - I can't really work out the differences between these different numbers - but thought something which was not quite as thin at hot temps, might quieten the engine a little. Mine is a 2009 but with 60K under its belt and gets used for 12-14K miles per year on a daily basis.MrTickle said:

That is some ridiculous recommendation. I mean 5w-30 or 10w-60? While both are oil they are about as alike in the viscosity department as apples and rocks are in the food department.First these engines have noisy valve trains. The engines are rather noisy to begin with as their camshaft covers are aimed right out vs. up and sort of buried under the engine compartment lid with lots of sound deadening like straight or V engines.
These engines also have very long cam chains while other engines use rubber timing belts.
A bit of noise is normal as long as there is no distinct spot the noise is coming from and the engine is not exhibiting any untoward behavior and the CEL is dark, etc.
If the OP wants to run a thicker oil there are plenty of approved 5w-40 oils and even one approved 5w-50 oil (not a typo for 15w-50!). I have taken to running 5w-50 in my 02 Boxster (which has over 280K miles on its engine and was running 0w-40 just fine thank you very much it was just that I decided given how warm it was where I live and drive that I could run 5w-50 year 'round) and will switch the Turbo (with over 120K miles on its engine) over from 0w-40 to 5w-50 at its next oil change.
BTW, both engines have been just fine running 0w-40 even in triple digit heat and are not bothersome noisy even with 0w-40 in them. They do get a bit noisy as 5K miles roll up but since I change the oil at 5K miles this is not a problem. The Turbo has an oil pressure gage and the oil pressure at hot idle and at other RPMs is just fine even with 5K miles on the oil and the engine fully up to temperature even in triple digit ambient temperature.
