Long time lurker - first time poster... Porsche 997.1.C2S
Discussion
Hi guys,
As mentioned quite a long time lurker, but I have a question I hope you guys may be able to help me with.
I have a 2008 Carrera 997 C2S, in Olive Green, with a whole boat load of options thrown at it (carbon fibre, special paint, PCCM, etc), but most importantly the X51 Powerkit, which I think is a bit rare. I bought the car last year after reading about it on this forum at RJR.
The X51 obviously comes with the PSE when you hit the sports button in the console, but recently a neighbour of mine has come up in a 991 50th year edition and his exhaust sound is so much more ear-grabbing. Do you think this is standard? I think this guy deals in fast cars as he has previously had a Lambo and also a new GT40(!).
My question is - is there anything that can or should be done to a 997.1 C2S with PSE that could make the exhaust that little bit raw without killing it when not in Sport mode? I apologise in advance if this is a stupid question, or if the forum feels that the PSE is already sound worthy enough...
Many thanks,
Hegdesh

If you were happy before then I'd leave it. I had a C2S cab before with PSE and it sounded excellent.
His probably has PSE only, I've heard they've improved the sound of PSE on 991 because 997 Gen.2 owners complained it didn't sound good compared to the Gen.1.
You could spend thousands on new equipment that 'might' make it better but most likely not. I believe changing to an air filter such as piper cross or BMC will give you more pops and crackles.

I did the following when I had my 997.1 which had PSE and made quite a difference:
1. Disconnected the plug inside the engine bay that was connected to the VAC. Tape the plug with electrical tape to prevent water getting in and just let it hang down. You will get permanent PSE with no warning check light.
2. I also added a BMC air filter as mentioned above together with the Helmholtz resonator mod. Google it. This both can be found here as a package and it retails for a reasonable £169 (although you are effectively paying £69 of the £169 for a plastic cap!). It is called: Cold Air Induction Kit with Filter

The change to exhaust note / engine noise was definitely noticeable, loud and fairly agressive when you dip the throttle.
Hope that helps!

You may need something like a Sharkwerks or Fabspeed exhaust/cat-bypass pipe

This piece replaces the center muffler with straight through pipes - but retains the side mufflers which include the switchable flaps from PSE.
I'm thinking about doing this very same thing on my 997 GTS, if I decide to keep it.

But the Sharkwerks only fits Gen-2 997s. The Gen-1 doesn't have a centre silencer. http://www.sharkwerks.com/products.php?pid=193

Cat bypass pipes together with the Gen-1 PSE side cans sound like a 1950's tractor with a hole in the exhaust. (Same with 200-cell cats/ PSE). No cats also = no MoT (ever) and permanent engine management warning lights. They also destroy torque under 3000 rpm or so as the mapping's all wrong.
If you're going to do an exhaust on the Gen-1, 200-cell cats will liberate sound and give you a 15 BHP or so power hike with increased mid-range torque. But as the standard cats do as much silencing as the side cans, once you take that silencing away the side cans go totally out of control, with massive resonance peaks and incessant droning. You therefore need to replace the sides with something designed to work with 200-cell cats. Cargraphic and FVD both do great products for the Gen-1.
