Hi all,

I am having the clutch replaced on my GT3 and am weighing up the not inconsiderable cost to upgrade the flywheel to a single mass...

Has anyone done so and able to provide me with opinion on whether it's a worthwhile investment and any downsides - I've heard it makes the gearbox a little noisier at lower rpm and particularly at idle.

Cheers

How do you use the car.

Mines more of a track toy, so doing the fly wheel made sense.

If its mainly a road car I wouldn't bother personally.

what flywheel are you using. aasco or porsche motorsport?

remember to upgrade the pulley if you are using the motorsport item.

light flywheel is very exciting and does transform the feel although i don't know if it ends up being faster.

Thanks both, I use the car enthusiastically and am interested to know why the upgrade is worth it for track day use?

Cheers

Hi Simon, they are better for track use because you sacrifice some low revs drivability to gain a freer revving engine.
Because the flywheel weighs less there is less inertia on the crank to keep the engine turning over, hence sometimes the car may stall and you need more revs to pull away from a standstill.

I have a 996 with one and I love it. Summer drives only and no sitting in traffic. The revs climb and drop so quickly and the response is razor sharp.
I'd definitely recommend one unless you use the car as a daily and sit in queues of traffic a lot. smile

thanks Mark,

That's good to know and I don't use the car as a daily and try to avoid traffic!

Cheers

Other than the pulley, are any engine mods required? I'm wondering if the non-RS engines are balanced with a dual-mass flywheel in mind?

More of an issue with the bigger capacity engines, but makes you think.

you won't find a definitive answer unfortunately...

Not many cranks break
All the cranks that break are running single mass flywheels?
