996 Windscreen Wiper stalk issue
Discussion
Something odd happened to my wiper stalk at the weekend - it no long clicks when moving between intermittent/off/on.
All the functions still work but it is a matter of trial and error to line the stalk up in the right position.
Is this a common issue ... and if so am I looking at an expensive fix?!?

Spooky!
Wondered about costs as bought car from an Indy that will cover labour (but not parts) but means a long journey either way (doubled if there more than a day) so not sure whether to run it up there or just use a local place.
Keep us updated if you get yours sorted - mine will have to wait for a couple of weeks before I get time to book it in.

Yes It is a common issue my screen washer switch packed up on my stalk, but rather then go through all the aggravation of replacing all 4 stalks as they are joined together, typical I just wired up a seperate toggle switch for my washers. But for your problem it will probably mean replacing the whole switch system.
Just had another look at design 911 site, typically mine looks like the most expensive of the options at £275 for a complete unit, http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt199_479_-cma81-cmo...
slightly disappointed it's only lasted 28,000 miles

Know 10 years sounds a long time for a car related item but I've never had an indicator stalk (or any steering column item) go in any previous car I've owned ... not sure 10 years is that impressive a life span if only done 28,000 miles?
Mine has done almost 90k so a bit more acceptable I suppose

I have a 2003 996 3.6 and I have had the indicator stalk fail twice and bought second hand combination units from Porsche independents for about £100.The most recent one was a few weeks ago and my local OPC fitted it for me that took over an hour and only charged me £45.90 including VAT that I negotiated prior to the work so I thought was a bargain as I had three cups of their coffee,a few biscuit,a pocket full of sweets and a good look around the new and used cars. They even offered to wash my car but said no.
My cars done 120k so really only just run in and still on original everything except tyres, brakes and two combination units.

Just had the three lever stalk mechanism replaced on my Boxster yesterday followings the failure of the wiper stalk
Seemed to just fail over the weekend strangely - sourced a replacement secondhand through Cotswold Porsche for a reasonable £75 and luckily the car was booked in at the local Indy Porsche specifies for its MOT so fitted whist there
Could do it yourself but I think the airbag light has to be reset
All part of the fun I suppose .........

If you have a 3 stalk unit with the on board computer but no cruise control then I understand you can buy the 2 stalk replacement and retrofit the OBC lower left stalk as it is screwed on. My indicators have stopped auto cancelling (2003 996T with 46k) and I have just ordered the 2 stalk unit to replace myself. There is a youtube video that walks through the procedure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hux78ZoPcAIslightly disappointed it's only lasted 28,000 miles
