I personally think they got better with age until they ditched the manual, for me that's a must when we are taking about the best or most rewarding to drive. Has to be a manual. I need to drive the 996 RS on track, but I think the PASM cars make better road cars. The 4.0 has the best engine, that combined with the chassis tweaks means its my favourite. The 997.2 GT3 close second.
The 981 Cayman S is really high up there for driving on the road too. Just the right amount of power and a very playful balance.

i've owned one of each example (with one exception, GT3 4.0 RS) over the past 5 years, and my personal favourite remains the 996 GT3 RS, although to be fair you can't really compare the GT3's with the aircooled cars - they are very very different. Of the aircooled cars, much as i loved the 2.7 RS, the 964 RS was the most invigorating drive and the 993 RS left me a bit cold (but maybe i had a duffer). so for me, the hardcore cars are the most rewarding for occassional road and track use.
I think that GT3/RS should be somehow judged starting from the 911 they were based on. I mean how they improved or changed the basic 911 experience. The 993 RS was the first GT3/RS I drove and it felt special but I was so young and euphoric, to be fair I have some doubt about the amount of improvement over a standard 993 like the one I knew because my dad let me drive its own sometimes. When the very first 996 GT3 arrived it was otherwordly put against a regular 996. I liked the 997 S a lot so I was thinking that no similar improvement was achieveable with 997 GT3 but I was again impressed even if the step forward was taken in a different direction, certainly less extreme the latest 996 RS.

(no,I've not driven it but I don't care - it's still the best to drive!

No offence meant. Sorry. It's just that the 996 is so extreme to me as a road car it's hard to imagine a more extreme car. Apparently a 964 is the same, the 993 from personal experience is a pussy cat. I found it a little dull to be honest.
None taken matey no probs. I sometimes think about the 'aircooled' side thoughDon't blame you. I'd love a 964 or 993 again, but it just doesn't make sense when the better driving cars (anything 996 or 997) are all cheaper. For instance a mk1 at 45k when a a 993rs is over 150k now. Mad. But to me it's what it's like to drive and crucially how exciting that counts, not what purists and connoisseurs deem to be the most iconic/collectible

Yes I understand. To drive for me the gt3 takes some beating though id like a 964 RS to look at

From a driving perspective, those who commenced their driving with the water cooled stuff will always find the air-cooled "love" a little illogical. The 7.1 GT3 is awesome VFM.
