Hi there,

As you may be aware, there can be a problem with the lining of cylinder 6 due to running temperature being too high on the Porsche 997.

As prevention is better than cure, my local Porsche independent has strongly recommended a different thermostat, which allows the car to run cooler. He also recommended Slick 50 additive. (Some oil would need to be drained before the Slick 50 was added).

My car runs perfectly and with 52,000 clocked up, has clearly been well used.

Would you have any thoughts or advice on whether the replacement thermostat and Slick 50 are really needed?

Cheers!

Happy Christmas!

No idea on the stat, but I'd not put slick 50 in my lawnmower let alone a porker!

I've fitted a low temperature thermostat to my 3.4 987 on the advice given by Hartech.

I too would not recommend Slick 50, but have replaced my oil with Millers Nanotech which does a similar job to Slick 50 but uses much more modern additives. This again was recommended by Hartech.

Low temp thermostat is the no 1 mod for the M97/7 engine, dunno about slick 50,didn't know you could still get the stuff.

Isn't slick 50 something old people used to use in ford anglias? It's hardly a 21st century product where fully synthetics and modern engineering means things basically last forever if used sympathetically and serviced meticulously.

52K on the car with the bad old stock T-stat in place and no signs of any problems with any cylinder. I'd say that bad old T-Stat is taking its sweet time wrecking havoc on the engine. Sneaky T-stat. Probably just waiting for the right time to strike.
