I have a 1998 911 996 Tiptronic S which suffers from slightly bumpy gear changes from 1st-2nd-3rd and then smooth thereafter.
If I drive it in manual mode its smooth from 1st thru 5th but in auto mode the changes are not as smooth as they used to be.
A colleagues Launch diagnostics flagged up a problem with a solenoid pressure relief valve so we replaced that (and did an oil change at the same time) which helped but has not totally cured it.
Any suggestions gratefully received???

It could be software related - have you had it reset?

Yes, they cleared the fault codes and reset it but the problem remains.
I'm not sure how many solonoid pressure relief valves there are.
Is there one for each gear change?

check oil levels in the auto box, I found this to be one of the most common reasons for jerky transmissions.

Clearing the fault codes with a normal code reader is quite different to using proper Porsche diagnostics to reset the software - which was done?

No, it was not cleared by Porsche.
The codes were cleared using the latest 'Launch' diagnostics pack.

Given that the tip only pulls away in first when cold I'm surprised it's that much of an issue. Mine literally only uses first when I first pull off the drive, then it pulls away in 2nd. It only uses first if you go to ull away quickly, at which point it drops to 1st with a bit of a jolt or if you flick it to 1st with the buttons. If your box is always selecting 1st you have an issue.

Refilling the box with fluid needs to be done very carefully and precisely. To get the level right the box has to be at 40 degrees I think. The wrong fluid levels can cause issues.

It's also worth resetting the adaption values in the software. It drives a bit jerky for a while after until it learns the change points again but it worth doing.

Get the software reset on Porsche diagnostics, which any decent Porsche specialist should have, then take it for a drive.
