I've been reading far too many posts on here and Rennlist about fitting a 997 gear shifter assembly into a 996. I think I've decided on the standard 997 assembly (997 424 010 00) over the GT3 version (997 424 010 91) because I've read that the standard gives the same throw and feel as the GT3 model at a cheaper price; the GT3 may be more robust, however, but I'm not doing any tracking with it. I don't want a short shift kit.

Reading on Rennlist I've seen that some people upgrade the shifter cables to the cup versions. This is supposed to further improve shifting feel, but increases cabin noise and hurts the wallet. This lead me to the DesignTek cables, and the purpose of this post:

Has anyone tried these? Does it make a £325 difference? I've had a Google but can't find anything describing it.

Thanks as ever

Hi Joseph,
I have fitted the 996 cup cables, albeit on a 997 (which meant I had to modify the end where the cable meets the shifter). It does transmitt more noise, but not at all road speeds. All in all it doesn't bother me and is hardly noticable (it's basically a slight kind of whining noise from the transmission) - keep in mind that mine is a GT3 RS which squeals and rattles anyway.

It did make a difference albeit two years down the line I am not sure if I'd do it again - how much of that sentiment is owed to the fact that I'm not for my life remembering how it felt with the original cables I don't know smile

Great, thanks for the reply, especially for the description of the noise! My poverty spec C2 already whines from the transmission, but it's something I'm quite fond of, so a little bit more won't hurt.

I think I'll get a price quote for the 997 shifter, 996 cup cables and the bits required to make it fit; if it's a fortune more expensive than with the DesignTek cable I'll rethink.

Would still be interested if anyone has any experience of the DesignTek cables, but I understand that this is getting into pretty niche interest territory.

Cheers,

Hi

The DesignTek cables are actually Numeric Racing cables (http://www.numericracing.com/Products.php). I have then on my GT3. I have also had the cup cables on the car too. If you are using the car on the road you don't want the cup cables in my opinion. I found them too intrusive especially on tick over although I do have the LWFW which I think added to the noise.

The numeric cables are very nice and give an great precision shift without too much additional noise.

I would recommend the 997 GT3 shifter too.
