I was thinking it wasn't too bad... Not a fan of the big wings on road cars (ironic that I owned a S1 Exige!).

But then saw the interior!! Woah, that'd be a tough one to live with.

It has! I remember its being advertised when I got my C4S X51 in 2019.

An acquired taste. The X51 is superb though!
That interior! I suppose if you pulled out all the orange bits and replaced with standard that wouldn't be too expensive and then you could live with it smile
£55k though, pretty strong??

The PDK generally can only be fixed by Porsche and I understand its a bill not far off the engine on the .1. Not saying PDKs are falling left right and centre, just that its the weakest link, if any, in the .2.

As you say, the tech never ages so so well, not unlike the F355 "F1" or the E46 SMGs, the appeal is more in the manual for a "fun" car.

But yes, for same-ish money you'd likely go .2 PDK over .1 manual!
There are Specialists who are well versed in fixing PDK boxes, you're not wedded to an OPC

Strong?

Its ludicrously overpriced, and would be even if the car had a decent interior

Question for the TIP owners out there: are there any tips and tricks on how to drive the thing? After my initial warm feelings towards the C2S Cab Tip, I’m feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the experience of this car compared to my base coupe manual and dare I say it, my dearly departed SLK 55 AMG.

Although a fast car, the 3.8 doesn’t appear as revvy as the 3.6 - yes it has more torque but not as responsive as the 3.6. The Tip is perfect for London driving, posing and being seen in, but the car feels like a cruiser more so than a sports car.

I’m not sure I’ll be keeping this car for long.

Well it’s a cab and it’s a tip, you have kind of got what you paid for.

If you want a sports car there are other models in Porsche’s oeuvre better suite to that role. But you know that.

It’s a matter of what you want. Whether you want a sports car or something to mince around in.

A word of caution though. I specced a 991 as a sports car and then used it for mincing around in. I ended up hating it, because although it could do both jobs it felt like driving any other German car. I have never hated a car before, but I hated that one.

Great stuff, nice to see and I hope it becomes more common giving us more options than OPCs.

Had a nosey at the links.

- Sports & Classics state: "We have extensive experience in all Porsche manual transmission overhauls from 1960-2009", which makes me think they've only recently started on PDKs.
- Autogearbox team seem to focus on DSG boxes, are they the same as PDKs?

Just adding another one from ATM's linked video above for future referennce, great video btw!

I'd suggest it's simply a case of selecting gears manually, particularly to ensure the car sets off in 1st gear. If you leave it in D it's always going to feel sluggish and I think they set off in 2nd gear unless you really boot it.

Select gears like a manual (1st to start, mostly 2nd around town) and it will feel better, especially once the torque converter locks at around 3-4k rpm after which the throttle and the rear wheels are properly connected.

According to Autogearbox website PDK is just a DSG derivative, and they can work on them

Sports and Classic are a good outfit, it doesnt matter if theyve only recently started dealing with PDK issues. If they say they can deal with them, they can

Thanks. I’ve just taken it for a spirited drive and it does come alive in manual mode as you say. One trick that I’ve learned from the internet is the double tap if the accelerator to downshift to the mist accelerate gear.

It’s sure footed for sure and quick. It’s just getting on top of the gearbox and its inherent tendency to get to 5th gear asap!

Initially most problems were probably on gearboxes covered under warranty. So Porsche sorted them / replaced them and none were the wiser. It is only when cars fall out of the warranty window that some owners are forced to go elsewhere. This then spawns the specialist network to get their fingers out. It is just probably a DSG / DCT type box inside. No one reinvents the wheel. However for now I would still assume a certain level of the unknown in terms of risk as a used purchase. Although saying that I saw some chit chat from a 718 manual owner who had a problem with 3rd gear and ... drum roll ... said the parts for this to repair are unavailable from Porsche. I'm not 100% on that as it was all just 3rd hand internet chit chat. I do know GT4 owners were having a recurring / well known problem with 3rd gears in their manuals also. Dont know if these boxes are the same but would assume the GT4 would have parts available being a GT type product for racing applications.
