Left in for a service this morning, main dealer, 3rd year service, 13k miles.

The inevitable call comes around lunch time. Sir....just to request permission to fit front discs and pads. The pads are at 2mm and the disks are heavily corroded. I decline.

Get the car home, wheel off, pads not even at the 50% mark. Measuring 10mm on the vernier. Discs clean as a whistle.

What really winds me up is that had it been my wife, or many other unsuspecting customers, they would have instantly given the go ahead based on 'safety' and 'main dealer respectability'.

Took some pics and will email them to the service manager tomorrow for all the good it will do.

I had this common attempted scam at a bmw main dealer. It went badly for them, especially the service manager. They even have a name for it, upselling.
Upselling is to kind. To me that’s when I go in to buy a 320d and come out with a 330d. This is just plain deception.

So to update the story, I sent the pictures to the service manager. He came back to me saying that the wear was only on the inside of the pad where I couldn’t see.

Took the wheel off again to photograph the inside pad and disc and send that to him this afternoon.

I had mentioned taking it to headquarters as I thought it was deceptive behaviour.

Don’t really have a goal in perusing this but as a previous poster said, taking advantage of people who know no better in any other walk of life is considered criminal, yet these guys get away with it day in day out.

They can charge what they want it’s a free market, but that isn’t what this post is about, the post is about consumers being lied to, often on safety critical parts to create work that isn’t needed.

Nearly every time I have taken a car to a “chain” dealer they have lied to my face about one thing or another. Glad I found a local Indy I can trust as it’s just tiring having to double check everything to make sure they aren’t ripping me off when they quote work.
Not in my experience. A video is sent of the tyre depths being measured in BMW dealers. My nearest is certainly competitive on service prices.
They’re not all bad. But unfortunately they’re a long was from all being great.
