My Wifes Golf has a musty smell coming from the aircon. I have replaced the pollen filter but its still doing it. I've seen quite a few different products that claim to clean the aircon. They all work in the same way - set aircon to recirculate, set off an aerosol in the footwell and leave for 10 minutes.

Has anyone tried one of these ? Did it work ? Can you recommend one to me ?

You've hit the nail squarely on the head really, as they do indeed all do the same thing, I.e. They kill any bacteria that grows on the evaporator, and is the cause of the musty smell.

The only thing I'd say is, look for a fragrenced one, the fragrance after is pretty strong, but it beats the non fragrenced ones that stink of strong chemicals

Just use a can of Oust, or other bacteria eating air freshner. Use it as the expensive ones that are sold specifically for air con bacteria eating.

I had the same problem when I picked up my vectra....I didnt bother with any cleaners, I just ran the air con on its coldest setting for 20 mins or so, then kept the air con on but turned up the heat to max, again for 20 mins. This sorted the musky/damp smell.

An air con engineer told me to try it, something to do with the heat killing the bacteria I think.....anyway always worth a go??
