Can it be done. Any kind of car, that'll hit 60 in less than 6 secs, do 30[ish] mpg on a COMBINED CYCLE and cost £400 or less for a MAJOR service?

An Elise will comfortably beat all of those figures as long as you're willing to use a specialist rather than a main dealer for servicing. A full cam belt service at a main dealer will probably cost you more than 400 quid, though.

Does it have to be new? If so the Megane Reanultsport 250 comes damn close.

No doesn't have to be new. Megane is a good call though...

Not quite 6 seconds to 60, but the BMW E36 328 and E46 330.

I'd also look at a 172 Cup.

BMW Z4 3.0si. The most expensive service is £380; which is every 8 years if you do low mileage.

Caterham and a set of spanners?

How about the Mazda 6 MPS (as a more sensible option)? Think it might be marginally over 6secs to 60.

My current car is an E36 328, so I've ticked that box smile

I do have a soft spot for all the Renaultsport Clio's, but I feel they just might not have enough oomph!

How about the new Focus RS? 5.9 to 60, 30.5mpg (officially. wouldn't expect to get that regularly though).

Not sure on servicing costs, but it is a Ford so shouldn't be too bad.

Both the Mk1 & 2 would be on my list [depending on budget]. I like smile

S2000 will (& 30MPG+ when driven lightly, although that probably wont happen) wink Cheap to service, no cambelt to change, 54k is the major service.

Along the same lines: Audi TTS, S3 and Golf R. Leon Cupra R just misses out on 0-60 due to being fwd.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy :

option 1 : VX220 NA

option 2 : VX220 Tubby

option 3 : VX220 VXR

make your selection based upon how much money you have to invest, and how quickly you'd like to lose your license.

How would the mpg of the 3.0 coupe compare to a 309bhp 350Z in the real world do you reckon?

Megane R26R? I'm biased though.

Having said that I'd take the Elise!

Yup. And it'll easily beat 30mpg as well. Not that I care.
