Hi folks,
Question for the peeps on here,

I am looking at a car that has not really moved for three years apart from a 4 mile trip a week ago and MOT time, the last one being a year and half ago, July 2009, and a big service was carried out where the timing belt, tensioners etc were changed at 57590 miles in 2005, it was then serviced again in June 2006 and had 59445 by then, it now has bang on 60k

What should be done servicing wise. It's a 1998 naturally aspirated V6 if that makes a difference, also four wheel steering and drive. It was owned by an enthusiast who passed away hence the miles etc, I am good friends with the son and know the family so I do know the car and its past.

Cheers in advance

Craig

I'd change oil, water and petrol. Is it an interference engine (ie when the cam belt goes do the valves meet the pistons and shag the top end)?

If it is I'd be inclined to do the cam belt even though it's not done many miles.

If not, I'd just run it if it doesn't look to be deteriorating from old age.

I've had a few cars that have had a quiet history before us taking ownership, a bit like your one.

Due to their low value have not done much other than oil and filter, mot, decent tyres and clean up the brakes (by driving/checking/driving).

We didnt have any problems, this including being used on spirited road driving and the odd track day eg Lydden/Brands/Bedford.

So, old age and low mileage and limited use does not = cambelt failure. Then again it does not mean that the belt wont fail! How much is it going to cost to get a local garage to fit a new belt/tensioner? How much is the car worth?

If it were me, I'd change the cambelt anyway just for peace of mind. I couldn't cope driving everywhere like a pansy wondering whether something is going to go pop.

That's what I will do then, get the belt changed as soon as, the tensioners and water pump should be ok though I presume?

If you're having the belt replaced, you may as well go the whole hog with the other two. Extra peace of mind and a good selling point if you decide to punt it on in the future.

It's a hell of a lot more work though which is putting me off a bit, I mean they are just bearings are they not? At around 3000 miles of pretty easy use since fitted you can understand my reluctance to go the whole hog
