No charge; public service- child in distress and potential for harm.
Does that mean they do get charged for non distressed child type stuff?

couldn't you have set them alight and then doused them so it wasn't a wasted shout?

We should bring back the stocks just for the embarrassment factor.

How do you keep your cool on a callout like this? As much as I'm laughing at their idiocy it must have really hacked you off.

Is the key hole visible or not?

I only ask as it took me bloody ages to find the key hole when the Passat B6 was launched and I had one of the first in the country.

Good point, some cars you have to prise off the plastic covering the key hole first.
But then again, I know this because I read the manual and take note of the important stuff.

I have just been to an emergency call (along with £250k of fire appliance and four frontline firefighters...)where a couple had accidentally locked their toddler in the mini, along with the keys.

"Do you have a spare key sir?"

"Yes, but it won't work."

"Why not?"

"Because the remote fob is in the car and the spare doesn't have one."

"Have you actually tried putting the key in the door lock sir?"

You can guess the rest...
Same happend here last year on my housing estate, came out to go out and there was a copper about to smash a focus window, the baby was asleep on the back seat in a child seat and when i asked what was wronge the woman said "the remote wont open the door" well use the key then says i, woman and copper look blank so i grab the key stick it in the lock and solve the problem, well not the problem, the problem was they give driving liecences to thick fooks laugh

All very well if the lease company provides the manual, and not some laminated A4 idiot sheet.

A very good point it took me all of 10 minutes to work out how to get under the bonnet of a Focus the other day the badge hides the key hole, ive never had a lockable bonnet before!

Back to the original post though you should really have smashed the windows in. I had to do this many years ago to my neighbours metro when she did the same thing I can't tell you how satisfying that is smashing in a metro and being the hero!

Am I the only one thinking that if I had been stupid enough to lock my child in the car that a) I would be able to solve it myself and b) if it was enough of an emergency that they needed to call 999 then I would have just used a brick though the window?
but a brick might damage a nail or sumink, the one i helped solve outside me house the copper made the woman sign a waiver to cover any damage whilst gaining entry, she was allmost hysterical by the time he found a pen that worked, oh how i laughed as i walked away laugh

Similar situation some time back with a gent and his 7 series.

Remote had run out of battery and his dog was in the car with the windows up on a hot day.

"Tried the lock?"

"Do I look thick, these expensive cars don't have standard keys you know!"

"They don't put that key hole under the door handle for a laugh you know pal"

Promptly removing the actual key from the remote fob and unlocking the car that way.

People should really learn how their cars work.

Same. One fire engine and 4 firefighters to rescue a baby from a car? Either break in to it yourself or call the AA/RAC.
I don't even know why the fire brigade would entertain it, unless they were told the child was in danger. Perhaps the car was broken down on the motorway?

Reminds me of an incident my dad went to;

Bloke is in a car crash. REALLY plays up to the are you injured etc etc, so the Fire lads cut his roof off and spinal board him out.

He then tried to sue the Fire Service as they cut up his brand new Merc and he didn't have an injuries after all. rolleyes
