My wifes A6 has developed a load of electrical gremlins and is going to be off the road for sometime whilst they're sorted.

I need to pick up a daily for her in the interim as we live in a semi-rural location and she needs a car.

I've a purchase budget of 1,000 which I know in this day and age doesn't buy a lot but that's all
I can run to right now.

The car MUST be automatic, and a full size four door or estate, can be petrol or diesel, but I'd prefer no V8's as it is her daily.

I'd prefer under 100,000k but willing to consider if over and preferably within a 50mile radius of cambridge.

Any help would be appreciated.

2.5 v6 Vectra estate.

If its only 1k and a temp measure that is. And its the first thing that came to mind. I'd be suprised if anyone can find you a V8 for under 1k.

It's not cheap to hire a car at short notice. Especially not in that class.

OP- find a friend or a friend of a friend that knows a car dealer. Tell them your situation. It might be a 'pile' but it'll be a lot cheaper than renting.

ETA- Check eBay or AutoTrader for an older A4 1.8T. As I remember, they seem to be giving them away.

Petrol + match + call to the insurance co wink

Actually, scratch that. At todays prices you may be better off buying a car.

Perhaps (if you're not afraid of driving something with a bit of rust) a W210 E class? They're huge, but almost always rusted to buggery so can be picked up for pocket change. Milage shouldn't be a problem on these either - at 100k they'll be just run in.

I've already looked at hiring, but due to timescales and use, buying will be the better option for us

Plus with owning a car, you can worry less about being ripped off by the hire company if the vehicle gets a scratch or ding.

Volvo V70 D5 auto or petrol, reliable, comfortable, even 40mpg(D5). Big miles no problem either. Always get you money back as well. Something like this for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-VOLVO-V70-SE-10V-RED-/1...

My current shed fits your criteria perfectly! Unfortunately it's not for sale. I realise this is unhelpful smile

A 190E or any W124 Merc is a good shot IMO.
I share a W124 250TD Estate with my father - it's great and cost under a bag of sand.

The Merc idea appeals, I've never owned one before are there any specific pointers of models to avoid and/or seek.

I've found a 98 E320 local with low miles 80k FMBSH and 1 owner that looks ideal, any comments????
