Hi Guys

I had some goods delivered from USA, which FedEx sent a bill for on top of their freight cost for duty etc. Which is standard.

However, if the goods were returned back to the USA, is the duty still owed and does the FedEx invoice still need to be covered as the goods are no logner here?

Thanks

Muzzer

Why are they being returned?

Are they faulty, or have you sold them to someone else in the states or...?

IMO, FedEx charges will still need to be paid - as they are an admin charge for arranging the VAT payment, etc - But you should be able to claim back the VAT payment once you have proof of items being returned.

You'll need to square it away with HMRC, but generally goods that are only temporarily imported don't attract VAT provided you can prove they were re-exported. I'd talk to them sooner rather than later to clarify what needs to be done.

You will need to fill in a few forms, then they will consider refunding VAT, Fedex charges you will lose out to I'm afraid.
