d, just buy something cheap and cheerful for your first car. Don't mod it and build up your insurance. Then once you've built up a year or twos no claims, go out and buy something that has some poke and will be fun to drive.
I believe the cheapest cars for a new, young driver to insure are base model boring family cars. Something to look at would be a 1.4 five door Ford Focus or 1.4 five door Vauxhall Astra, you'll still be looking at a couple of grand to insure either of them mind you.
