I've always driven fairly small, cramped, sporty cars.

I know this is against the grain but I have a yearning for a 4x4. I big, lazy, slob of a 4x4 which will be an auto with some toys.

Let's say £20k is the budget. I notice Range Rover Sports are down this level, but I don't think I could bring myself to do it. That would get me a 2.7 TDV6 which is quite leggy.

Something like this would make me look like a helmet, but I think FFRR's are the way to go with this... http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2476435.htm

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2484300.htm - nice looking.

But then, there are a few alternatives;

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1594189.htm - Always likes these.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2403466.htm - Heading towards budget but perhaps a bit TOO big and flash looking?

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2430362.htm - these are really falling in value!!!

Some advice?

I've not really driven a 4x4 extensively on the road so it may be that when I go and try one that I hate it.

I'm hoping I hate it to be honest.

That'll set me off looking for a Phaeton/7 series/S class etc!

Hell yes! If you're going to do it, do it properly and get the Hummer! biggrin

Alternatively, I do really like the Q7. It's vulgar enough to be brilliant!

I'm a 4x4 fan. But for me I like 4x4's to be well, erm, 4x4's. And on big mud tyres too!

So to that extent I think for £20k I'd be looking at things like a Wrangler Sahara or Rubicon. Toyota FJ Cruiser. Hummer H1/2 or a Dodge Ram.

I do like G-Wagens too.

For the road going ones then a V8 or V8 Turbo Cayenne or V10 Touareg.

I was going to ask a similar question but in a more diplomatic way.

What will you do with the 635?

It depends what you want really. If you want a big, comfortable and quiet luxury car, then a Phaeton, 7 or S would be far better for road use than a 4x4, even a fully specced Range Rover. They might cost more to run though (parts etc - esp the S air suspension...). I think hate is too strong a word for a modern off roader (i.e. the ones that don't tend to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjnBpruer8g), but the general ride and handling won't be as good as an average FWD car like a Mondeo or a Vectra, purely because they're just too high up and with suspension that's tuned to do two completely different jobs in one.

We've been through this a few times now.

I didn't go through with getting it, considered it, priced it up, my Dad did get one - he got the first one.

Edderly, do I know you?

With ref. to the Hummer.

I couldn't run that! What would the consumption be on that? I'm used to 20mpg but I reckon that'd be single figures easy all of the time. Oh, and I'd look like a knob, and I'd have to sell body parts for tyres, and I'd have nowhere to park it!

Mazdarese, we did take delivery of one.

Deal seemed too good to pass up, but ultimately did.

Very extreme though.

I quite like the look of the Touareg I posted.
