Selling a car that you've had for years!
Discussion
Just been speaking to my parents and the Nissan Micra that has been in the family since 2003 was part ex/d against a new Honda Jazz last night.
Even though it was just an average family hatchback, 9 years old and in fairly ropey condition it is sad to hear that it has been sold. I went to my first Le Mans, all around the UK and to many PH meets in that car and as much as a lump of metal and plastic can do, it felt like part of the family.

I remember similar feelings when my dad sold his E30 316 Coupe when I was in secondary school. That car was in the family for 10 years plus!
So does anyone else get these irrational feelings of sadness when a car you've owned for years or that has been in the family for years gets sent on its way? Any stories of selling after an unbelievably large number of years?

My Mum is still driving my 106 that I bought when I first passed my test in '04. I gave it a proper thrashing and it just kept going (bar the odd breakdown!).
It got me through my first 2 years of Uni before I passed it on and I'll be sad to see it go when she finally decides to change.

Yep. My parents had a W124 Merc Estate which they bought in the late 90's. It was an absolute workhorse, taking us on some family holidays and my sister to university and back complete with just about everything she could possibly need. Of course it was exceptionally reliable. My folks got a newer Merc in 2009 and let me have it as a daily hack to keep the miles off my Corrado.. but in 2010 I committed the ultimate sin and sacrificed it as a scrappage car so my partner could get a good deal on a new Micra.
It was a tired old car, lots of stuff didn't work, and the (self levelling) suspension at the back had broken a bit - but believe me I really wrestled with whether I could even let it go at all for a few months on the run up to the big day. And I was absolutely crushed when I handed it over and left it in the car park amongst all the other tat Nissan had on sale. Genuinely I'd have rather kept the Merc and fixed it, rather than buy just about anything else they sold.
Gutted.

We just traded in my wife's Citroen Xantia - It was a good car, we'd had it since almost new and done over 100,000 miles in it over 11 years on family holidays, skiing trips, all sorts, but it was just a car and although we felt a little sad to see it go, I don't think anyone was that bothered.
I can't imagine really getting that upset about selling any car.

I know what you mean. My Grandma owns a 2000 Renault Scenic, she needs to sell it as she cant drive a manual because of an arthritic left hand and she may not need a car anyway. However she simply can't, it was bought by my late Grandpa brand new and has taken them all over Scotland over the years with my brother and I so it has too much sentimental value. She has offered it to me for my 17th, and as much as I wouldn't like it as a car, I would love to keep it in the family. Unfortunately I can't afford to run it, and she's now stuck with what to do

My ex told me that her Dad had a Cortina from the early 70s right up until the mid 90s, kept in perfect condition. One day a lady ran a red light and slammed straight into the side of it and that was that. Very sad.
Next week I'll have had my Elise six years and have decided that I'm never selling it!

My Polo has been in the family for getting on 14 years.
My older sister got it as her first car when it was almost new. She went for a puple one rather than one with fancy electric windows.
My younger sister then ran it for a while. She had a bit of tree land on the roof, and put the scuff in the front wing as well as the dent in the rear bumper.
She got rid of it as it was too big a shed by then.
I have had it for almost 5 years and have taken it over the magic 100000 miles as well as saving loads on fuel not using the TVR every day.
Still chugs on getting 50mpg.

ETA pic that works.
