Had this with a diesel BMW. You have a fuel leak albeit a small one. Basically all the fuel is running back into the tank where it should be held in the lines by vacuum.

fuel pump still primes the lines though, assuming it's still immersed, so i'd assume all it'd take is a few extra seconds at most unless the pump is on it's way out or the regulator's not opening. i assume this new fangled common rail stuff uses a reg on the end of the rail?

When you say it won't start, do you mean it turns over but doesn't start?

What if you just leave it turning over for 20 seconds? Does it start then?

had a car with this into us a few months back, non return valve on fuel filter usually doesnt get changed on a service, just the filter, we found a filter with the non return from fram, about £8 from fergusons of stirling ebay page. this fixed the fault straight away

Work associate of mine had similar problem on 06 model diagnosed by Audi main dealer as 'Lift Pump' problem. I assume this is, as has been said before, a priming pump of some kind.

Or it could be frightened of heights.;)

Fuel draining back to tank,
cheap easy fix=fit a one way valve in fuel line from ebay £5-7
or try and find where the air is getting in
spill return pipes/any joint in fuel lines,
lift pump can be completely out of service on a L/Rover TDI and it still run
C class merc I had I fitted the one way valve as above the Merc fix was a one way valve costing £100
a friends Saab 2.2 Diesel was the spill return pipes.
