When car magazines quote MPG figures are they talking about imperial or metric gallons?

I've looked on whatcar and which? and I can't see it stated anywhere?
It's for a project before I get accused of being sad

do you mean UK gallon versus US gallon - I have never heard of a metric gallon, dont those euro (metric) types use litres?

I would imagine that UK publications use the UK gallon (4.5l), whereas US publications will use their own version, (3.8l)

WTF is a metric gallon??

UK publications will be in UK (Imperial) gallons.

US publications will be in US gallons.

Anything else will probably be in km/litre or litres/100km.

I think if you use metric miles and gallons in the calculation its fine.
