Purchased a nice little, indestructable, reliable Pug 306DT off Ebay for the princely sum of £600 plus plenty of T&T, alls good until i get on the motorway on the way home and it dies, no diagnosis yet as its dark now but initial impression is cam belt/ head gasket/general engine explosion. I got home on the back of an AA van. Not my finest hour and swmbo is less than impressed but hey ho, its only 600 notes....... curse
Id have turned this into a rant at the seller and all sorts of other things but im losing the will!

Ouch, that's a kick in the nads.
Is it Worth mentioning to the seller and see if he has a conscience?

I think your mistake was buying a....

Poo Go.

More seriously, bad luck... 'appens.

I have bought a few bangers as second or third cars over the years. Always had one or more about the place for close on forty years.

Never had a bad one.... maybe I'm doing it right.

Always a first time though ... wink

Better luck next time.

And if the seller is a PH member, no doubt it'll be a case of caveat emptor.

Gutted for you OP. frown Hopefully it can be sorted easily with minimal cost.

The vendor wouldn't have known that cambelt was about to let go though, would they?

Unless they gave you promises about it just having been changed? Caveat emptor with old cars, anyway, and the Peugeot diesel cambelt failure interference damage is pretty well known - a colleague just had it happen to her 406. £700ish to put right, apparently...

it's all about perspective. Whenever my shed needs some money spending, i try and remember I have friends who've spent more on a service for their merc's, than my car is even worth!

I've had to odd couple of bad sheds. A wretched Nova with a oval wheel that would pogo its way down the motorway and had all sorts of problems.... i still twitch a little whenever i see a nova....

I hope your car can be fixed!

We shall see tomorrow, if i have time for a look before work. Fingers crossed!

Seller has no conscience.

Two TVR' and a 30 year old golf with people always saying im mad and asking how often they break down...answer was 'they dont'
I get a supposed reliable/indestructible car and it self destructs on the way home, if i wasnt so wound up id laugh. silly

Its only the engine that has exploded

Nothing bad like a tiny scratch in the paint

What year was the 306? There was a spate of con rod failures on 97/98 vehicles IIRC.

Not that it's of much comfort however i bought a 306 a few years ago for £100.00. It had 11 months tax & mot so decided it was worth the risk.

It subsequently failed the mot so i advertised it, for a laugh, for £250.00 sold as seen without an mot.

Guess what? I got offered £200.00 for it as the buyer wanted to learn mechanics so i snatched his hand off. I later found out that he stripped it down on his driveway, rebuilt it, got it mot'd & sold it on for £700.00!!

The later D turbo 306's had a bigger turbo but no additional strenthening (what i've been told anyway). I've seen one with a conrod sticking out the block with no piston to be seen, and another with very little of it's camshaft left.
