We are currently a 1 car family, but a new job for me means that Mrs RedLCRB0b needs her own car. We saw a very tidy low mileage Renault Modus this afternoon for a very reasonable price, but I know next to nothing about Renaults other than the reputation that French cars in general used to have.

I've had a look at the reviews on the internet which seem to be fairly positive (Top Gear rated it quite highly), can anyone on here give me a reason not to buy one ?

Ok when new but once past 3 years old it will be digustingly awful to own.

How so ? The one we looked at had 28k miles and was a 54 plate. We're not looking to spend much so it seemed to be a bargain.

I got given one as a hire car for a few weeks.
It was fine - lots of cubby holes, good seating flexability, upright driving position, it was also quick enough for motorway driving..as I have had hire cars which even now aren't.
As a family run around you could do a lot worse

Cheers thumbup

We are looking at spending 4k max and everything else I have looked at for that price/age has huge mileage. I'm open to suggestions if anyone can think of a better option.

Just to add, another option is a £500 banger that one of her friends is selling, however I don't feel very comfortable with it as a family car safety wise.
