Where I work there's a lad that pulls up in a modified corsa, to be fair to him it is quite discretely modified and doesn't look too bad (for a modified corsa), however, I saw it from the front yesterday, and the lad has either sprayed or wrapped the front section of his bonnet and stuck what looks like two nasty bits of pipe insulation where the black section meets the silver section. I pressume there is some sort of reason for doing this! Anybody know what it is?

Stone chip protector for when hes 1ft from the car in fronts bumper.

Personally I think the stone chips would be a marked improvement on this strange fad. Just like bare feet would be better than UGG boots.

I think you're refering to a 'bonnet bikini' - google it. An american thing to stop stonechips.

Ahh I tried googling various things "black bonnet foam wrap" but never thought to try bonnet bikini, I'll give that a try. Why the pipe insulation on them? I can see the point of the wrap although I'd prefer a few stone chips to a black lump of wrap like that!!! But not the pipe insulation foam.

They were more popular 20 years ago, and I have to admit that I also had one on my Mustang, but that was more to cover up badly peeling lacquer than to protect it. As mentioned, it will ruin the paint finish if not removed regularly and cleaned properly.
