I'm currently working abroad on a 6 month assignment abroad. Rather than sell my current car, and not wanting to leave it parked on street outside my flat, I've parked it in my employeers car park.

The car park is a private multistory carpark located on a large campus site ownened by my employer. The whole site is private property, and off public roads. The security guards who look after the site are aware the car is there.

The problem is that my assignment has been extended, and between now and the later return date the insurance cover and car tax will expire. As the car is on private property I was planing to declare the car SORN and let the insurance lapse, however, a colleague has pointed out that as the car is in a car park that other drivers have access to, there is a third party liability issue. If my car catches fire and takes out the car next to it, I would be liable.

So, am I legally required to insure the car, and if not, would it be sensible to insure it regardless. Are there brokers who will take on 3rd party cover for a car not being driven?

Cheers,
GD

It's quite common for classic car insurers to offer laid-up cover for restoration projects. Not sure how easy it will be to get this kind of cover for a standard car though. Try googling for 'laid up insurance' and work your way through the list.
