I have two cars that I love.. my BMW 535i Sport and my Renault 5 GT Turbo, however it seems a complete waste! I'm forking out 2 x insurance premiums, 2 x car tax, 2 x MOT, 2 x general running costs!

I don't drive to work (I live less than 2 miles from work), and only really use my cars for social, or just going for a drive

Both of my cars are worth around the £3-3.5k mark each, and I owe my Dad about £1500 which is going down about £300 a month. I'm 21 and earn about £950 a month, but I live at home. By the time I've paid my bills, keep and stuff I have about £500, £300 of which is going to my parents, and the rest is spent on living.

Basically, I hardly ever use my R5, and it's just sat there looking unloved. I love my BMW, and don't think I could sell that and just keep the R5, so the logical thing is to sell the R5 and keep the BMW, but every time I think about selling it, it makes me want to keep it! I don't know why, as 95% of the time, I'd rather be driving the BMW

Also, I could do with the money to pay off my debt, and work up a bit of savings so I can move out at some point

Should I sell the 5 or should I man the fk up, stop bhing and just keep the two?

You live on £200 per month??

Ditch the cars and live a little!

Good advice. Life is too short to not live it to the full by spending everything on a car (which you don't use).

Feel free to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a car you use but don't fork out all that money on a door stop. Sell the 5 and supercharge the pants off of the BMW would be my advice smile

Ok nobody has mentioned coke and hookers, what is this place coming too!!! smile

But I would actually keep the R5 if it is an original and unmolested example, as medium term you may even make on it.

You seriously think running an m5 will cost £4800 a year? Maybe when you factor fuel in dependent on miles, but I have factored my fuel into the above and after all that come out with £500 a month. Also worth mentioning I do all my own servicing and maintenance.

Either way, that wasn't my point. My point was that rather than spend £5k on a supercharger, I'd sooner hold onto mine and use that £5k plus the money from the sale of my car to buy an m5 when I'm in a better financial situation.

Lol!

I wouldn't call it original. It's kind of OE+ I guess..

That's the car (scroll to the bottom for pics of how it stands at the moment). I'm also not fond on the idea of keeping a car with the idea that the value will increase. It will rust, deteriorate, and will almost certainly end up costing me more to keep it tidy than any money I make on it when I come to sell it.

If I had a suitable place to dry store it on the other hand, then perhaps.. but not in this case!

I prefer driving and owning the BMW, so I don't think selling the BMW is an option!

Put both up for sale and see which one goes first (it will be the 5). Then just start saving for an M5.

That debt will be gone in 5 months, afterwards you will have an extra £300 to spend on other st. What is the problem?

Fair enough, for reference that R5 looks lovely - how much are you looking for?

Is there one car that can capture a bit of the essence of both cars? A Fiat Coupe Perhaps, something cheap to buy... Even a cheaper BMW.

In your circumstances (Young, living at home, single??? and owing money) I'd be looking to simplify things a bit, free up some cash and work towards the bigger things is life. I'd be tempted to sell both cars for their maximum value and get one good car that still makes you smile to keep you mobile but keep costs down.
Save a bit, look to improve your work to get a bit more cash in and start building a chunk of cash towards bigger and better cars or moving out at some point.

Plus, cocaine, hookers and beer are all important and don't come cheap.

Sell the BMW. It's an easily replaceable commodity; the 5 isn't. Make yourself drive the 5 - it's your only car and you won't have a choice - and see if you really like it once you're behind the wheel all the time. If you hate it then dump it with a happy heart. If you find that you love it, well, that's your decision made. Don't make a rash decision to sell the 5 because you won't find another one all that easily. You WILL regret ditching this car if you're not absolutely sure it's the right thing to do.

I'd say you're lucky having 2 cars at that age so I think you can stop moaning about the costs. As you don't drive to work sell the bmw and keep the 5, the bmw you can easily buy another car like that again but not with the 5.

Sell the bmw. Get to BBR, have the boost turned up to 175bhp on the R5, have the suspension sorted. Job done.

I still miss my R5 and I sold it years ago. Ok so I replaced it with a TVR but I have a soft spot for the R5 Turbo. Much fun.

Agreed, its not that hard to find a 5 though, the hard part would be one in as good condition as his!

Agreed, even is he did drive to work its less than 2 frigging miles anyway! Surely he can cope with a R5 for 4 miles a day!

He has a T25 turbo to stick on for more power and its already got coilovers on!

I have known BriC for a number of years 10+ maybe and ever since he has been able to drive he has always owned a R5 be it a GT Turbo or Campus, I have never known him without one. He's just being a Gehy with his big posh BMW... who at 22 needs a BMW 535? It's not as if us, his mates care about rear leg room or anything, Aircon? do we ever need that in the UK... hardly. Running costs on the BMW are a shed load more, 17-20 MPG, £450 for a set of tyres! If its the money that matters the BMW should go!

I definatly think the BMW should go out of the two.

Having said that and knowing him, he has already made his mind up in my eyes and he will more than likely get rid of the Renault! Such a shame. But it is his decision. I just think he's trying to convince himself even more that getting rid of the Renault is the best idea! In my opinion he will regret it though! I happy to be proven wrong, only time will tell!
