Private reg on retention: Question about new car.
Discussion
You can get the personal plate put on the car from new without any problem (assuming the date on the plate isn't newer than the car).
You can ONLY put the plate on a car registered in YOUR name or the name of a NOMINEE whose name is already shown on the retention form.
If your Mum isn't already on the retention form you need to get her name on there NOW. I think all it takes is her name and your signature on the form plus a cheque for £25(?) and send to DVLA.
No, you don't need to be present in UK for any of this. But your signature is needed on the forms to (a) add a new Nominee, and then (b) to put the plate on her car when the time comes.
