Hi All

Well after a year with the TTS I have decided that its time to stop playing the silly new expensive car game. Ive always spunked a large proportion of my wages at a car and im pretty fed up with it now.

Soooo the plan is to swap the TTS which has about 10k in it, for a boxster 3.4s / Cayman S / S3 or something equivelent.

Dont want to go over 20k which means im going to have to be open to colour choice and a quick buy, but there have been some about. A 3.4s, 20k Miles, in Midnight Blue just went for £17,500 on a well known auction site..

Will have the cash to buy the car straight out aslong as the finance company dont play silly buggers, but i will know that situation later today.

Was wondering if many people have made the change or if im missing any other options.

smile

Expect someone 'funny' to ridicule your choice of a 'Gayman' or a 'Coxster' at any moment.

Ignore them as the Cayman is just so good I can't begin to describe it, and the Boxster is almost as good but with the advantages of a cabrio. I'm a big fan of both, and I don't think you'll feel short changed after the TTS.

Will i do?

Buy a Cayman and you're stuck in no-mans-land - poor people think you're a tosser as you 'own a Porsche', 911 owners will think you can't afford a real Porsche and the whole thing has no character, soul or passion.

Does drive well though, so sure.

On what planet is a Cayman or a Boxster "Trading down" from a TTS?

Both are much better cars.

Someone will also be along to tell you buy some other VAG car that responds well to a remap. AFAIK you will get more Boxster than Cayman £ for £ but it depends if you want the open feel of the Box or the slightly nicer looking but not open topped cayman.

Cheers Garlick smile

Well after owning a TT for a year my skins certainly thickened! The Cabrio is an itch i still have not scratched and with 30 looming this year the option of a 2 seater is going to shrink year by year, unless im shooting blanks and ill be alright!!

I haven't owned a RWD car for about 9 years, and have spent the past 5 years in 4WD. Cant wait till it snows and i cant leave the house. Im the only mug who made it to work this year when it snowed.

As my trade down has the Garlick seal of approval ill get it arranged!!

True, but in financial terms....

I'd be very inclined to buy a Cayman if I were you, but then again I've had my fair share of cabrios

Thats sort of the point, I dont give a crapper what others think, I want a car thats going to put a smile on my face, not other peoples. Id of thought most educated 911 owners would look at a cayman and think, nice car. Im sure there will be nobbers that have a smirk, but they can smirk all they like....

I did start the thread saying it felt stoooopid saying Trading down to a Porsche Boxster S, where as it is a Trade Up, but half the price of my golf, i mean tt... Thats the main reason its goto go, Its twice the price of better cars!

Is PASM a must on UK roads?

I went through the Cayman vs Boxster vs Z4M Coupe vs Z4M Roadster journey last year.....

I was one of those people who had never considered a soft top, never saw the point of them.

If you've not had one before - get the convertible.

I agree with both Garlick and Pilchard here. Both boxster and cayman are great cars (irrelevant of the non-intelligent generic moron responses they get from some) and i'd be looking at something like this;

http://www.rsjsportscars.co.uk/used-porsche/porsch...

Admittedly slightly over budget, but with some bargaining and maybe a little budget stretch you might be there...if not keep your eyes peeled for another auction one.

I also agree that in terms of driver smiles they will knock the spots off your TTS.

Good luck.

Get a Gen 2 Boxster or Cayman if you can.

Have you considered a 370Z? For the money its an exceptional vehicle.

People who think they won't like a convertible are those who haven't been in one. I was the same until I got my Boxster S and I love the convertible aspect of it more than anything else.

I'd be willing to wager that the Cayman posted earlier will be slightly less ruinous to run for 2 or 3 years than the M3 cab, I do like the colour though getmecoat

Have looked at the 370z, but at around 23k i can imagine them dropping to 15k in a much shorter amount of time than a Boxster S. The convertible side is an itch that ive got to scratch. And im sure if im not keen i can resell in the summer and not take a hit at all.

Love the colour, not so sure about the car tbh. Ive got the niggle for a small sports car.

Ive been keeping an eye on this one. Good Spec, but wrong colour. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2115947.htm

This is the car that made me think Boxster. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Just need to now get my monies ready and go get me a car!

Stump up another 5k and you might be able to add a 996 Turbo to the shortlist. The looks are subjective but they're more robust than the vanilla 996 and certainly quicker than a Boxster or Cayman.

In addition, they've got to be somewhere close to the bottom of their depreciation curve now, so while it may cost more to buy one, you shouldn't lose as much as you would on some of the other cars you're considering.

obviously the 987s are more desirable/better...

but!

are you doing this to save money?
if so won;t the 987s cost more to run? have you guestimated the difference in running costs vs. depreciation?

have you thought about the z4m and lotus europa as alternatives?
(and run the same numbers).

If it`s a smile a mile you`re after , consider an Alpina D3 , I`ve spunked a fortune on high end performance cars, .............still got 2 and hardly use them now, the D3 ( single turbo `06 model) is a sweet performer . It`s a different driving technique to master, narrow power band ( 302 ft lb torque , same as the V8 Vantage ) the clutch, brake and throttle are placed to encourage nimble footwork so the gearchange is exemplary. Dare to be different !!
