press the zapper against your head and then press the button. it will work from a lot further away then..

weird but works! (was on Top Gear years ago)

As above, put the "zapper" on your chin and it should work from much further away. No really.

My other halves car did this and ended up with the rear door seizing closed. She also drives a piece of French crap. Think the drivers door solenoid and the rear door catch mechanism are at fault, but not worth replacing.Replacing the batteries made no difference.

Depending on how old your 306 is the remote central locking was infrared not radio, so it will only work relatively close and with line of sight (as in you have to point the key at the receiver).

They are known for a central locking problem. Basically you lock it with the zapper and one or all of the locks "bounce" i.e lock then "bounce" unlocked again, this is normally caused by issues with the wiring bundle that goes from the door to the car itself, they are designed to do that when you leave a door open so it could be that wire that causes the problem. Google an owners forum, probably www.306.net or something like that, I'm sure they will be able to help with more specific issues.

This ^^^ it's infared so has to be pointed at the sensor, try cleaning the IR unit by the rear view mirror and on the key, and maybe another set of batteries...

You only need one guess to know the answer to that question.
