Pronounced Nine-One-One or is it supposed to be nine-eleven?

Everyone I know says nine eleven, but if it was any other model it usually is nine six eight, never nine sixty eight.

Beard strokers begin.

I started to remember a few years back now that, people always used to say, 9-one-one.
then after "9/11" september 11th, twin towers. 2001.
People started to say 9- eleven. More.

I'm sure of it.
It's my little - perhaps crazy- theroy, anyway.

its 9-11, but you make a good point.

Like www / world wide web, it is perhaps one of the few abbreviations that are actually longer than their origin?

No, for some reason they are all known by three digits, even the 912.

But the 930 is a 9-30 as an exception.

Begs the question, why? it's very un-German like.

I don't think it's them. I think it's us.

I would think this is related to how the numbers can be written, someone that speaks good german could probably explain the "-er". My german is very rusty and my brain isn't working at all at the moment.

I've called them Nine-Elevens since I was Nine or Eleven and that predates the incident in New York by a number of decades.

I've seen German TV where they called them Nine-Hundred and Elevens too.

I don't suppose it really matters.

Yes, but it's odd, I would have thought the Germans would have had a whole manual on the meaning and correct pronunciation, it's not like them to leave it open.
